It was included in the holiday register back in the Soviet Union. The year 1980 was marked by the adoption on October 1 of Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR No. 3018-X “On Holidays and Memorial Days,” according to which not only the military fleet, but also the civilian fleet was awarded its professional holiday. On November 1, 1988, a new edition of the document was published under No. 9724-XI.

Spectacular sailboat competitions dedicated to the Day of Maritime and River Fleet Workers will be held on July 1, 2018 in the waters of the Khimki Reservoir. Ten teams from the Russian Ministry of Transport will demonstrate their skills, including the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Moscow Canal”.

The festive regatta, which first started in 2016, will feature high-speed sailing yachts of the J70 class, capable of reaching speeds of up to 20 knots (36 km/h). It is on these boats that the National Sailing League, the largest project of the All-Russian Sailing Federation, is held. Each sailboat has five racers and a skipper. The length of the distance, depending on the wind strength and its direction, can vary from 1 to 2.5 miles (1.85-4.6 km). Competitors must complete it in two hours.

The team of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Moscow Canal" includes yachtsmen with rich experience - captain of the Moscow basin Vladimir Shturmin, head of the cartography department Sergei Bessonov, deputy head of the Tushinsky district of hydraulic structures Alexey Kirillov. The decoration of the Moscow Canal yacht will be the girls - head of the department of the industry center Polina Rasenko and Marina Pakhomova from the navigation service. The skipper will be determined by lot on the day of the regatta. This will be a representative of the technical organizer of the competition - the PROyachting company.

A sailing regatta is a series of races in which the crews start within five minutes. With the opening of the starting procedure, the teams set out on the route. Depending on the wind direction, rotary buoys will be placed at the Khimki Reservoir. The goal of the race is not only to finish before your opponents, but also to complete the distance according to certain rules. Thus, any contact with a buoy or another participant will be punished by a 360-degree turn. The success of the race depends on the tactics chosen by the team, on the coordinated execution of the skipper’s instructions, and, of course, on the wind. According to tradition, the winners will receive prizes, diplomas and medals.

“The regatta on Riverman’s Day has become a good tradition. After all, we not only work, but also relax on the water. This is not the first time that the Moscow Channel has participated in such competitions, and, of course, expects to win prizes. Such races help maintain a healthy lifestyle, strengthen interaction with colleagues in the transport industry and, most importantly, become a real celebration of river sports.
