The best apps for learning English. How to Improve Reading Skills Using Mobile Devices

And again, welcome to visit me!

We talk, as always, on important topics related to language learning.

Often the desire to learn English rests on the lack of time and effort. You have to read textbooks, memorize the rules and complete assignments every day in order for the learning process to be effective. It takes too long and as a result people just quit their activities. But there is a completely different approach - to use English learning apps.

Why are apps effective in learning languages?

Now, with the help of mobile phones, people not only repeat the rules already learned from textbooks, but also learn English. They are recommended by every third person, and the number of downloads for iphone and for android has long exceeded millions. Such popularity of using apps for learning languages can be explained by their effectiveness and convenience.

I also used this teaching method, and now I will try to explain why it has already gained so many adherents.

You can study anytime, anywhere

As you already know, the most important component of any training is constant repetition of what has been learned and regular practice. You need to perform daily, practice pronunciation and learn new words. Moreover, to get a good result, it is recommended to practice daily, and most people simply do not have time for this.

Mobile apps solve this problem. You can complete the daily exercise while riding the subway, waiting in line, or standing in traffic. This is a significant advantage, because other methods of study do not give the student the opportunity to learn anytime, anywhere.

An example from life. For my friend, when learning English from scratch, the stumbling block was the lack of time. There was a desire, but when you work all day and come home by 9 o'clock in the evening, the prospect of sitting down to books again seems not the most rosy. With apps it's different. Tritely arriving home on the subway, she could just turn on the phone and tighten her tongue a little.

The standard process of learning English requires memorizing rules and doing exercises, sometimes even written ones. You have to learn words from the dictionary, constantly check with. Mobile games that are designed to teach you English use simpler methods. For the most part, the learning process will take place in a playful way.

This method is also suitable for adults, as it is not only a great way to kill time while driving to work, but also a useful activity for your language skills. The game form of learning is recognized as the most effective, as people remember information better if it was presented in an accessible and interesting form. It works the same way with languages. Thus, you will be able to remember better not only words, but also complex grammar rules.

Everything is on your phone

If you use Internet services for learning languages, then you probably know that most often you have to use several sites at the same time. One site has a grammar, another has pronunciation exercises, and a third has a handy dictionary.

And modern mobile applications include almost everything the above and more. You can learn new words, practice grammar, repeat rules and improve your pronunciation. And, I repeat, all this is always with you, and you can use all these benefits at any convenient moment.

You will be taught based on your level

Undoubtedly, each person speaks English differently. Studying from books or going to expensive courses has become simply impractical. That is why people have found an alternative - the use of free mobile applications. Indeed, at any suitable moment, you can open the “apk” on your phone and learn something new for yourself.

Using a computer or mobile phone, the user can choose the product that is right for his level of knowledge. In turn, the application offers exercises of appropriate complexity and grammar.

Making a choice on your own is quite difficult. Therefore, I bring to your attention the top popular English learning apps.

What do the majority use?

One of the most popular mobile applications that includes listening, grammar and word repetition system.

Lesson in "Simpler" is divided into three blocks:

  • getting to know new words
  • familiarity with grammar rules. For example, a proposal for mastering the material will be indicated
  • practical tasks. Includes the previous two blocks.

Simpler Functions:

  • can be used without internet
  • language rules in a simple and accessible form
  • game-based learning
  • remembering and repeating words

All theoretical and practical materials are available free of charge. But for the full course of training, you need to purchase a monthly subscription. It can be extended using earned points in the game.

I didn't expect too much from this app, to be honest. But after a few days of use, I was ready to immediately transfer some money to the developers. The fact is that the rules, with the understanding of the work of which my students suffered for weeks, I managed to learn in a couple of days.

A word

"Aword" is considered one of the best. It allows you to replenish vocabulary, includes tests and exercises. With the help of simplified algorithms, learning English words will become an exciting game and you will be able to memorize new words easily.

"Aword" includes:

  • algorithms and exercises for memorizing words
  • built-in translator
  • pronunciation and transcription of words
  • sets of words on the subject with pictures.

The application is free, but if you want more features, you can always subscribe to a paid subscription. As for me, it's worth it, because here you can pull up both pronunciation and vocabulary. You are given picture cards, grammar, transcription, and even voice acting for the correct pronunciation.

The game form of education makes it easy to learn English for children and their parents, with different levels of the language. Before starting training, LinguaLeo offers to take a test that will determine your level. It has:

  • simulator (translator, listening and pictures with words)
  • offline dictionary
  • personal dictionary (you can add words with voice acting and transcription yourself).

It can be downloaded to your phone for free. If you want more features, I recommend buying the premium version. But I will also add that I used it for free, and the effect is not worse. And here you already have to choose yourself.

If you forget about LinguaLeo for a few days, the app will immediately remind you of yourself. Emails and push notifications will be sent. This annoyed me a little, but for people who constantly forget that they need to study English regularly, this will help a lot.

Lessons in Duolingo are suitable for users who have just started their learning. But, if you believe the reviews, then it can be used by people with any level of the language.

Peculiarities:

  • trains grammar, vocabulary and spelling
  • possible creation of a personal dictionary
  • there is a personal assistant - Owl, which will remind you of the lessons and help in solving tests
  • the program is an arcade game in which a certain amount of time and three lives are given to overcome the task
  • You can only level up if you reach a certain number of points.
  • for completing tasks you earn bonuses for opening new levels

Duolingo is free, but there is also a paid subscription that removes ads and allows you to take tests offline. I didn't use this app for long. Quite convenient, but for some reason it was quickly forgotten that it was in the phone. But regarding efficiency - no complaints. According to the principle of operation, it is very similar to LinguaLeo.

words

"Words" is an exciting game for memorizing words. You can easily memorize new words and practice spelling. The program is intended for users with different levels of knowledge of the language.

Advantages:

  • available in offline version
  • practice difficult pronunciation and spelling words

The idea of this program is that for your language level, Easy Ten will select at least 10 words daily.

  • daily you will replenish your vocabulary
  • it is proposed to write letters using learned words
  • there is a calendar to which you can track your progress
  • pronunciation trainer
  • reward system

For some reason, Android users did not appreciate EasyTen. But I put this app on the list for a reason. In fact, if you constantly forget to learn new words, and do not know which topic of words to choose today, this is what you need. Plus, it seems to me that 10 words is the optimal amount for any user.

Personal experience using applications

But the effectiveness of mobile applications can also be judged from personal experience. It can be said with certainty that this method of learning is faster and more interesting. For example, if we compare the experience of memorizing words from a dictionary and using Words, then I definitely give my preference to the latter. This method is corny simpler, but as you know, the simpler new information is presented, the easier it is to remember.

You will not think about the upcoming lesson, imagining memorizing the next set of rules and words. Here you just enjoy the process. Plus, it's free. Think about how much your last English courses cost.

The only disadvantage of this method is the constant pop-up ads. It interferes, you constantly accidentally press on it. It's annoying, but you can always buy the premium version. Such a pleasure is not expensive (certainly cheaper than a set of textbooks), but the effect will be obvious.

And now some results:

  • mobile apps are a great alternative to expensive books
  • mobile "apps" are not only games, but also a way of self-education. Moreover, it is very efficient.
  • English learning apps will help you learn and maintain a high level of language.

If the article was useful, share it on social networks. If you do not agree with my choice or know better applications, write in the comments. I will be glad to any responses. Thank you for reading this long article to the end. And, as always, good luck with your language learning!

A review of interesting, useful and non-standard applications for Android and iOS for learning and maintaining English at a high level.

This is possible thanks to three types of exercise: the Challenge section, the Your Sounds section and the All Sounds section. With an intermediate level and above, you can read articles on the site english-online.at.

5. Read engaging posts

And this "reading" is suitable for those who have a minimum of free time. Follow English learners on Instagram or Twitter and follow their posts. Both notes in English and tips for learning the language will come in handy. For example, you can subscribe to our

Before moving to the United States, the question often arises: how to learn English if you have never spoken it before. One option (besides schools and speaking clubs) is mobile apps. Their advantage is that you can practice in any convenient place and at any convenient time. Minus - without live communication in English, you still won’t speak. However, with the necessary discipline and regularity of classes, using mobile applications, you can lay a good foundation for the future of fluent English. The method of study, and, accordingly, the mobile application itself, must be chosen based on your personality type. After all, what is good for the visual is not suitable for the auditory, and for the kinesthetic it is generally a waste of time. "Forum" has selected ten of the best applications for different tastes that will help in learning the language.

1. Polyglot

The lessons in the "Polyglot" are structured in such a way that everything must be read and said aloud. Screen shot of the application.

This is a simulator for teaching English, created based on the TV show of the channel "Culture" - "Polyglot. Learn English in 16 hours. The course of sixteen lessons was developed by the famous linguist Dmitry Petrov. If you are not afraid at the start, you can come to the finish line as a winner. And at the start: the scheme of tenses of verbs, which is the basis of the language. The essence of the technique is that you bring everything that you are offered to learn to automatism. 2.Easy ten

When you find out that the author of this application is a plastic surgeon, you understand why it is not only useful and convenient, but also aesthetically beautiful. In this application, we took into account that only beginners do not always want to replenish their vocabulary. In the application, you can choose words to remember from those categories where you have the most spaces. You need to choose the level of your training and, based on it, the "robot" will replenish your vocabulary. A handy thing: put the words you want to learn into a special player, and they will be spoken out loud again and again - in English and in Russian. You can search and add to the lists the words that you decide to learn. For example, translate a foreign text and, so that new words are not forgotten, create a list of them, which is given to you in portions, according to the methodology conceived in the application.

There is a Tamagotchi function. Remember that electronic animal that reminded you when to feed it? The “conscience” built into the application will definitely remind you: it's time to learn 10 new words. It seems that "10 a day" is not enough? But "300 per month" sounds much more solid.

Price: The application can be used for free for three days, then you need to buy the full version for $4.99 for a month or $19.99 for a year.

3. DuoLingo

When using the DuoLingo application, T9 should be disabled, because if you use hints, you will deceive not the application, but yourself. Screen shot of the application.

Getting started with DuoLingo is worth taking a test that tests your knowledge. You have to be as honest as possible, as with a doctor or a lawyer. The program remembers mistakes and then will offer to repeat those words that are written or misunderstood.

In DuoLingo, you can choose the level and tempo yourself. The entire learning process takes place in the form of a game. Each level has three lives. Spent - start over.

There is also a function in the application from the series “Please, slow down, I’m writing down”: if you don’t understand what a native speaker is saying, you can choose the option where the same phrase is pronounced very slowly.

Of the minuses - there is not enough information on grammar, so for completeness of sensations, you will have to download another application in which grammar will be the strength.

4. LinguaLeo

The LinguaLeo app will add words like "sharp tracker" or "meatball" to your vocabulary. Screen shot of the application.

A sort of "Big Brother", which immediately conducts a rigorous test and determines the level of knowledge of English. Confused by all the a-the-an - get all the grammar lessons you deserve. New words can be learned by selecting sections. If it is convenient to perceive by ear - listen, with your eyes - see the illustrations. This is one of the few applications where grammar is not left for later. A lot of time is devoted to her, and knowledge is constantly checked. If you made a mistake, you will master this form, theme or design again.

If you're a kinesthetic learner, this app is just right. During the training, for example, you will have to translate the lyrics of songs, favorite TV shows and films. A more accurate appeal to your memories and imagination cannot be imagined.

There are no “reminders” in the application: if you didn’t study, it’s your own fault, no one will remind you, and you won’t send notifications either.

In the application, you can buy a "gold status" and get full access to all functions, for example, to a more in-depth study of grammar.

The dictionary can be independently expanded and replenished not only with words, but also with whole sentences. Since the form of learning is playful, be prepared for the fact that words like "sharp tracker" or "meatball" will appear in your vocabulary.

6. Effortless English

Effortless English / AJ Hoge is another app for learning American English. His motto is to teach with your ears, not your eyes. A teacher from San Francisco has developed his own system, which is based not on learning the rules of grammar, but on the fact that you listen to short stories, and then - his explanation of these stories.

Next is the trick: you listen to the same story in indefinite tenses, continuous tenses, perfect tenses and perfect continuous tenses. By comparing how it all sounds, you understand how tenses “work” in English. From an easy level, you can go to a difficult one, and then to the most difficult one.

Price: The application can be used for free, with optional additional levels for $1.99.

7.LingQ

The application is completely different from competitors. Such a large library and database of online lessons, perhaps, is not found in any other application. A convenient feature: the application remembers which words were difficult for you, marks them and periodically “throws in” information so that difficult words are repeated and remembered. The paid version differs from the free one in that it allows you to communicate with the teacher, but even without this function, the application has enough functions for those who want to learn to understand, write, and read fluently. An important nuance: for high-quality work, it is desirable to have a permanent connection to the Internet.

Price: The application can be used for free, with an additional purchase of the ability to communicate with a teacher from $10 to $79, depending on the intensity.

8 British Council

The trial version is enough to understand whether the methodology of British linguists suits you. Don't neglect the Phonics Stories app, which is also part of the BritishCouncil family. 10 Words

This app is recommended and named the best educational app by Apple itself. Words is recognized as the best application for learning English words, entered the top of the best applications of 2014 and became the Best new App in the same 2014. If you trust, try it, especially since the application is available for both Apple products and competitors with the Android operating system.

A big plus of the application: it can work without an Internet connection. There are about 10,000 words in the dictionary, and what words to learn, what to focus on during class, will be decided by the program itself, which can adapt to you after the verification test.

There are 330 lessons in the application. In one lesson, you can learn 20-30 new words. The free version has only the first five lessons, which can impress a beginner, but greatly disappoint those who have a vocabulary at the everyday level that does not need to be replenished, and the basics of grammar are already available. But if you decide on a more serious acquaintance, get a dictionary for 40,000 words and the ability to create independent lessons, that is, give tasks to the program: they say, I want a dozen or two new words and tasks about integrals and jumps by tomorrow. And you'll get it!

Price: Is free.

Unfortunately, none of the applications can download such an additional feature as perseverance and perseverance. You will have to find them in yourself! Otherwise, alas, it does not work.
