"Russian knights" in Malaysia. History of the group's performances

After the LIMA air show on the island of Langkawi, there were a lot of photos left that couldn’t fit into one post.
First, a photo report about our beauties - the Russian Knights aerobatic team, who turned 22 yesterday.

This is the first performance of the Russian Knights in Malaysia after the sad events of December 1995, when three fighters, returning from an air show, collided with a mountain near Cam Ranh. Then four pilots died.

I didn’t want to start the report with a reminder of sad events, but in no case should we forget about them.

It’s almost 9 am, ours are still covered and only five Malaysian MiG-29s are standing with their canopies already open. The smoking bandits didn't get to fly every day like we did. On the opening day, they say they flew, but I missed it, and on the second day they were not allowed to fly.

The Pilatus of the Indonesian group Jupiter Aerobatic team and the babies of the Extra-300L Royal Malaysian Air Force are sleeping.

The fighters flew to the exhibition from Kubinka near Moscow via Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Chinese Taiyuan and Vietnamese Hanoi.

The technicians arrive first and prepare the cars for takeoff. I have a few minutes to take pictures near the planes - soon the Malaysian curators of the exhibition will arrive and drive all strangers outside the fence.

The bag lying on the asphalt is a brake parachute that has not yet been filled.

They will send it here:

This is how the parachute is released during landing

And in this form he taxis into the parking lot. The parachute itself is detached from the plane on the runway and is immediately picked up by technicians.

A little case with a remover and a long rope wrapped in a bun. By the way, why is it so long?

All ladders and other equipment arrived on the Il-76

Here he is, by the way. Several spotters are hiding in the shadows under the wing. As you can see, there are no fences between the static and the runway. On public day they won’t be there either, but every few meters there will be tough guys with machine guns standing on the grass.

And on weekends, all equipment will be fenced off from harm. I personally saw how visitors opened one unattended light airplane and furiously took pictures inside.

Five Su-27s arrived in Malaysia, of which two were twins - numbers 20 (Alekseev) and 24. Three aircraft were numbers 08, 10 and 16.

What aircraft details should I photograph next time?

I shoot everything from my point of view - to make it beautiful.

Demonstration flights usually began around half past twelve and on the second and third days the Vityaz were launched at 13:10 and 13:18.
On the fourth and fifth days of the air show, the flight program took place in the morning and afternoon; Su-27s flew only in the second part.

Before the flight, each pilot inspects the aircraft.

One by one, the Sushki are sent towards the runway.

All the technicians line up in a row, each in front of their aircraft.

Before execution, the aircraft are inspected again. Over there you can see a technician melting in 35-degree heat. By the way, it’s no colder on the plane.

In the center on spark number 20 is Andrei Alekseev (co-pilot Andrei Yuminov), also the group commander, guard lieutenant colonel, 1st class military pilot.

Born on May 23, 1973 in Wittstock (GDR). In 1995 he graduated from the Kachin Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots named after. A.F. Myasnikova. Served as an instructor pilot at the Borisoglebsk flight personnel retraining center. Since 1998 he has served at the Cuban airbase. Flown 1200 hours on the Yak-52, L-39, Mig-29, Su-27 types. Has been involved in aerobatics since 2001. Flies as a master and as an outboard, inboard and tail wingman.
Married. Raises a son and two daughters. He spends his free time with his family. He is interested in skiing and cars.

Passage with landing gear extended.

All eyes on the sky

The group today includes five more pilots: Oleg Erofeev, Sergei Shcheglov, Alexander Bogdan, Denis Plaksin and Yuri Limarenko.

Why does one smoke more?

I love taking pictures like this - it’s as if I’m shooting from somewhere above. Focal length 800 mm.

Su-27, in my opinion, were the most popular among spectators

Moist air forms clouds at high angles of attack.

After the five pass through, one plane separates and the four turn around and pass in a tight diamond formation. Then it blooms beautifully.

And during the dissolution of the quartet, just such a picture is caught,

Then three oncoming aerobatics follow, a single display, then the four reunite and again bloom high in the sky. At this moment, shooting heat traps looks especially impressive, but in Malaysia it was not allowed. Let's wait for April 19 in Kubinka.

Dissolution in cloudy weather.

He took the cloud with him.

Here, by the way, is a relatively new element of the program - Drying in the background slowly passes with a “bell” figure (correct me if I’m wrong), and a foursome rushes past at high speed.

Commander among the palm trees

This time we were never able to catch the plane against the background of the sun.

Taxiing to the parking lot after landing.

Let me hug you, my friend!

Alekseev and Yuminov were handed the carriage along the steps.

Alexander Bogdan signs the flight assignment.

At the end of the flights there is a short discussion about how we performed.

From the news:
During the exhibition, the Air Force Commander-in-Chief announced that Russian pilots from Kubinka near Moscow will gradually be transferred to new modern aircraft - the multi-purpose Su-35 and the Yak-130 trainer.
The aerobatic team welcomes the idea of creating a separate group on the Yak-130 trainers, one of the pilots said at a press conference.
“We welcome the creation of a separate aerobatic team, but in general this question is for the command. The Yak-130 is a new and very promising training machine,” the pilot said.

TASS-DOSSIER /Valery Korneev/. On June 9, a Su-27 front-line fighter of the Russian Knights aerobatic team of the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed

April 5, 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Russian Knights aerobatics team of the Russian Air Force (since August 1, 2015 - as part of the Aerospace Forces, Aerospace Forces) of Russia.

The group "Russian Knights" was formed on April 5, 1991 from pilots of the 1st squadron of the 237th Guards Proskurovsky mixed aviation regiment of the 16th Red Banner Air Army of the USSR Air Force (now the 237th Guards Proskurovsky Red Banner Order of Kutuzov and Alexander Nevsky. Aviation Equipment Display Center named after I.N. Kozhedub, 237th Guards TsPAT, Kubinka airbase, Moscow region).

"Agency "Voeninform" of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation"

Since 1967, the 237th Air Regiment has specialized in aircraft demonstrations and aerobatics; since May 1989, the regiment's pilots have mastered front-line Su-27 fighters. The name of the air group was chosen at the suggestion of pilot Nikolai Grechanov. Over the years, the group included 31 military pilots.

Currently, the group operates four Su-27P fighters (modification for air defense forces) and two Su-27UB (two-seat training modification). Demonstration flight programs include four- and six-aircraft formation aerobatics; synchronous, counter aerobatics of two aircraft, as well as single aerobatics.

History of the group's performances

The first performance of the “Russian Knights” took place on August 24, 1991 at an airshow in Poznan (Poland), where the solo aerobatics program was demonstrated by group commander Vladimir Bazhenov. In the early autumn of the same year, the Sukhoi Design Bureau created a unified visual design for the group’s fighters in white, blue and red colors. The first group performances of the Knights took place in the autumn of 1991 at RAF Lukers and Finningley air bases, where Russian Su-27s flew with the British Red Arrows aerobatic team.

Since 1991, "Russian Knights" regularly participate in demonstrations of aviation skills at air shows in Russian cities and abroad - in the Czech Republic (1991), Malaysia (1991, 1995, 2013), USA (1992), France (1992, 1997), Holland (1993), Canada (1993), Slovakia (1994, 1996), Norway (1994), Luxembourg (1994), Turkmenistan (1994), Austria (1996), China (1998, 2006, 2012), UAE (2005, 2006 ), Belarus (2006), Finland (2008), Bahrain (2012, 2014), India (2013), Hungary (2013), etc.

Flights of the group's fighters in a diamond-shaped formation, both separately and as part of the "Cuban Diamond" (nine aircraft together with the MiG-29 of the Swifts aerobatic team, which is also based in Kubinka), are a traditional element of the program of the International Aviation and Space Salon ( MAKS, Zhukovsky, Moscow region), Victory Parade on Red Square in Moscow, International Naval Show in St. Petersburg.

“Vityazi” took part in the laser show of Jean-Michel Jarre during the celebration of the 850th anniversary of Moscow (1997), and accompanied the airliners of the British Queen Elizabeth II and French President Jacques Chirac during their visits to Russia in 1994 and 1997.

Disasters

During the history of the Russian Knights, three disasters occurred in which the pilots who were part of the group died.

December 12, 1995 During the flight from Malaysia to Russia after participating in the Lima-95 international air show, three fighters of the group crashed. The collision with the mountain occurred while landing to refuel at the Vietnamese Cam Ranh airfield. The reason was the unsatisfactory organization of flights in difficult weather conditions. Four pilots were killed: Guard Colonel Boris Grigoriev, Guard Lieutenant Colonels Nikolai Grechanov, Nikolai Kordyukov and Alexander Syrovoy.

The disaster was the first loss among the group's personnel.

August 16, 2009 near the Ramenskoye airfield (Zhukovsky, Moscow region) during a training flight in preparation for the MAKS-2009 air show, Su-27 fighters (tail number "14 blue") and Su-27UB (tail number "18 blue") aerobatic team collided in the air, one of them fell on a cottage in a holiday village. The commander of the 237th TsPAT, Igor Tkachenko, died, and another pilot received a spinal injury. Five residents of the village were also injured, where three residential buildings burned down as a result of the disaster. On August 22, 2009, by decree of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Guard Colonel Igor Tkachenko was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.

June 9, 2016 The Su-27 front-line fighter of the Russian Knights aerobatic team of the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed near the village of Muranovo (Pushkinsky district, Moscow region). The pilot, Major Sergei Eremenko, died.

Future aircraft rotation

It is planned that during 2016, Russian Knights pilots will switch from heavy combat Su-27s to more modern machines. In January 2016, Colonel-General Viktor Bondarev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, told reporters that the decision on which Vityazi aircraft would be flown in 2017 would be made by the Russian Defense Minister.

In March, the leading pilot of the guard air group, Colonel Andrei Alekseev, told media representatives that the command had set the task of re-equipping the aerobatic team, and the pilots and engineering staff were already undergoing a retraining program for a new type of aircraft. What kind of car this is is not yet known.

The maneuverability of the new machine for group aerobatics may not even be a good thing - the aircraft is more maneuverable, more sensitive to the controls, which means that it can be even more difficult to control it in group aerobatics than the simpler Su-27. Let's listen to what the pilots have to say
Comes in w/n 37.

05
This time I didn’t ask the pilots who flew which aircraft, so I will only write about the ones on board. Another photo b/n 37 (I think this is Guard Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Shcheglov)

06
Next, no. 36 (maybe this is Guard Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Erofeev?) I’ll have to ask.
It’s interesting that last time everyone except Alekseev landed with an air brake, but today everyone landed without releasing the “shovel”. Apparently the conditions are different.

07
The Su-30SM is super maneuverable, equipped with a phased array radar, thrust vectoring engines and a front horizontal tail surface.
Enters b/n 35, he is also in the title photo (it is possible that this is Guard Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Bogdan)

08
The Su-30SM's ability to simultaneously detect and engage multiple targets and its super-maneuverability are unique.
U/n 34, which was at the head of the diamond, is landing, which means this is most likely Guard Colonel Andrei Alekseev

09
I really want to see aerobatics in the new cars!
Andrey Anatolyevich. We are looking forward to it!

10

And given that there are now eight new cars in the group, we can expect new figures too!

This has never happened before, or I don’t remember!
Russian Knights flew to Novosibirsk at the same time on Su-27P and Su-27UB and Swifts on MiG-29 and MiG-29UB
A pair of Knights. b/n 05 - Guard Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Ivanovich Erofeev, b/n 02 - Guard Captain Kochetov Vladimir Gennadievich

01
A pair of Swifts. b/n 07 - Guards Lieutenant Colonel Osyaykin Sergey Ivanovich, b/n 31 - Guards Major Zubkov Dmitry Sergeevich

02
Big picture

The groups fly to China for the Airshow China, Zhuhai.
The first to appear in the sky were the “Russian Knights”, on the Su-27. We thought that four planes were flying, but it turned out that the fifth - Guard Lieutenant Colonel Erofeev - had already landed. A local crow flew out into the sky to meet the pilots.

03
The planes quickly began to disperse. There was a real carousel in the sky! 11 aircraft landed with an interval of less than 1 minute, and several civilian aircraft circled in the holding area, giving priority to combat ones.

04
Cool turnaround! This is landing w/n 02 - Guard Captain Kochetov

05
The couple walks further, at a minimum distance from each other. This is b/n 20 - Guards Colonel Alekseev Andrey Anatolyevich and b/n 12 - Guards Lieutenant Colonel Bogdan Alexander Sergeevich.

06
At the combat turn, b/n 17 - Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Vladimirovich Shcheglov, commander of the Russian Knights AGVP

07
The Russian Knights have not yet sat down. And a trio of Swifts is flying over us, I see b/n 29 - Guards Major Sergei Aleksandrovich Sinkevich and b/n 32 - Guards Major Dmitry Alekseevich Ryzhevolov

08
On the taxiway, Guard Lieutenant Colonel Bogdan greets us, raised the brake flap and waved his hand! Thank you! Glad to meet you.

09
Big picture
And now the Swifts are taxiing into the parking lot, this is w/n 30 - Guard Major Vasily Vladimirovich Dudnikov on a MiG-29

10
The commander of the Swifts, Guard, Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Ivanovich Osyaikin, arrives on a twin MiG-29UB with no. 07.
He carries a braking parachute with him, making the work of the selection team easier... And who is that with him in the cockpit? Yes, this is the head of the Kubinka Aviation Equipment Display Center, Colonel Konstantin Anatolyevich Shatailo! Pleasant surprise!

11
Big picture
The swifts are lined up! Handsome guys!

12
And at another parking lot, nearby, Russian knights! This hasn't happened for a long time! Yes, and was it?

13
We meet the pilots. I am glad to personally greet Konstantin Anatolyevich! Before that, we only knew each other in absentia, by phone, and by correspondence...

14
Well, how can you not take a photo with the entire crew of pilots from the famous Cuba? On the left are Russian Knights, on the right are Swifts (except Kochetov... J).

MiG-29 from the same angle

17
After spending the night in Novosibirsk, the air groups moved on to Irkutsk, where they will conduct training before the air show in China. Swifts fly out in threes, but all three do not always enter the frame. These are no. 07 and 31, Osyaikin and Zubkov.

18
But Dmitry Ryzhevolov flew into the frame at b/n 32.

19
They come off, leaving behind smoky trails. This is a feature of the RD-33 engine. By the way, it is the most popular dual-circuit engine in its thrust class.

20
The second trio, no. 02.30, 29, Kuznetsov, Dudnikov and Sinkevich, took off.

21
And also a quick break! Beautiful!

22
After a short period of time, the Russian Knights also leave in pairs. b/n 20 - Andrey Alekseev, b/n 12 - Alexander Bogdan

23
Big picture
Swifts left on course 07, to the east, and Vityazam turned on course 25, to the west. It’s even better for me - there will be different angles.

24
Because b/n 02 and 05 stood further, then they come off earlier! b/n 05 Oleg Erofeev, b/n 02 - Vladimir Kochetov.

25
Have a nice flight!

26
Went. Showing the afterburner flame.
