When does school start? Holidays in quarters

The academic year cannot begin on Saturday or Sunday, so if September 1st falls on a weekend, then classes begin with the ceremonial line only on Monday.

For almost the same reason, school holidays cannot have fixed dates. They are assigned in accordance with the features of the calendar for a particular year. In our case, in accordance with the 2018 calendar.

How the dates and duration of school holidays are set in Russian schools

Vacation periods in Russian schools are regulated by certain laws, which provide for different ages of students and the climatic location of schools. However, the exact start and end dates of certain holidays do not appear anywhere. Thus, each individual institution, be it a school, gymnasium, university or lyceum, draws up a school holiday schedule in accordance with its characteristics and needs, which is approved together with.

The only thing that needs to be taken into account from the law on school holidays is that for the entire school year, autumn, winter and spring breaks in total should not be less than one month. And the holidays between each quarter should not be less than 7 days. According to the law, at least 2 months are allotted for summer holidays.

School holiday schedule 2018

School holidays for first graders

Children who study from first to fourth grade are awarded one more week of vacation. They rest in February (last Monday). 02/26/2018 – 03/04/2018.

*The vacation schedule may differ from the above, depending on the specific educational institution or region of Russia.

Vacation dates are coordinated not only with legislative norms, but also with the opinions of schoolchildren and the vote of parents themselves. For certain reasons, vacation dates may be postponed, shifted, increased or decreased.

It often happens that early quarantine can affect the cancellation of the next vacation. Unplanned repairs, events, emergencies and the like may also affect the transfer of holidays to other dates.

School for students is the same work as work for their parents. And every working person knows that it is possible to effectively fulfill one’s duties only when periods of activity alternate with time allotted for rest and recuperation. That is why students are given not only a short-term change of activity in the form of breaks or physical education lessons, but also long-awaited multi-day ones.

Even those young Muscovites who are truly drawn to knowledge and love going to school look forward to the holidays. With the current workload of students, they do not have many free hours to walk in the yard, reach a new level in a computer game, or engage in a favorite hobby. For representatives of graduating classes in middle or high school, the holidays provide another important opportunity - to begin (or intensify) preparation for serious life challenges in the form of or.

It is quite difficult to find time to visit a tutor if the student already needs to solve many problems every day, write essays and compose abstracts on numerous school subjects. Information about vacation times is also of interest to parents, because everyone wants to spend a vacation with their family, traveling around the country or visiting relatives. Muscovites who today want to competently plan the 2018-2019 school year should familiarize themselves in advance with the long-term school education plan for this period.

Reform in determining vacation time

Russian educational departments have been discussing the topic of vacation time for several years now. Now Russian schools in general (and Moscow schools in particular) have quite broad rights in this matter. The educational department formulates recommendations, and the school administration, based on this document, determines the dates of vacations planned for the autumn, spring, winter and summer periods. Of course, there are general requirements that are mandatory for all school administrations in Moscow:

  • students are supposed to rest from autumn to spring for at least 30-35 days;
  • the first day of vacation must fall on Monday;
  • on hot summer days, schoolchildren of all ages should receive two months free from study or practice;
  • in the quarterly education system, each new educational period must be preceded by at least a seven-day rest.

Today, schools in the capital use several options for dividing the school year:

  • “quarter” classics, when students have to study for four quarters, separated by short holidays in autumn, winter and spring, as well as long summer vacations;
  • trimester structure - in this case, three periods of study are interspersed with vacation periods of longer duration than in the case of the quarter approach;
  • two-semester approach - reminiscent of the university system, only without sessions and with long holidays between study periods. Most often, this is how the educational process is organized for 10-11th graders, because they need to have time to gain maximum knowledge and early master the program necessary to pass final exams. Toddlers, of course, are not able to study so intensively;
  • modular educational process - in this case, the academic year is divided into five relatively equal parts with small vacancies between them.

Such a diverse approach to determining the structure of the school year has been repeatedly criticized - adherents of Soviet practice have more than once proposed issuing centralized instructions to school administrations. The main argument is the fact that different holiday periods do not allow for the normal planning of numerous creative competitions and other events held for schoolchildren.

Despite all the controversy, a unified holiday system for the Russian Federation was never chosen

Some of the students have free time at this time, while others have to travel to events, taking time away from their studies. Moscow schools even conducted a survey among parents to determine which structural approach could satisfy the majority of families, but no clear leader emerged. It looks like 2018/2019 will continue as usual.

Let us remind you that the most common options in the capital’s schools are studies in quarters or modular blocks, so it is for these that we will provide recommended vacancy dates. The final version of the schedule will appear only in March 2019 - the Ministry of Education will formulate its recommendations approximately 6 months before the start of the school period.

Holidays in 2019 when studying in quarters

The approximate schedule for the 2018/2019 academic year is as follows:

  • the start of school will fall on 09/03/2018 (September 1 is a Saturday, so on this day some schools can only schedule a ceremonial assembly).
  • the autumn holidays will take place from 10/29/2018 to 11/05/2018 inclusive, since the day off is postponed to Monday due to the 4th – National Unity Day;
  • the next academic period will last from 11/06/2018 to 12/28/29/2018. It is possible that schoolchildren will actually have to study on December 29 - all because the next Saturday will be designated as the work day for December 31.
  • 12/31/2018-12/10/2019 - recommended vacation dates, which can be extended until January 13 inclusive, because going to classes on a Friday is not advisable;
  • 02.02.2019-25.02.2019 – another short vacation period for primary schoolchildren. Additional rest on Monday occurs due to the postponement of the Saturday celebration of Defender of the Fatherland Day to the next working day;
  • 03/01/2019-03/22/2019 - the educational process, which will end with spring vacancies, approximately falling for the period from 03/25/2019 to 04/31/2019;
  • 04.05.2019-24(31.05.2019) is the last period of study under the quarter system, after which summer holidays for schoolchildren will begin.

Holidays in 2019 according to the modular system

With a modular system, schoolchildren receive a break every 5-6 weeks

Let us recall that such a schedule is usually represented by alternating 5 or 6 weeks allocated for training with 1 week of rest. Students will have to spend the year in this mode:

  • 09/03/2018-10/5/2018 – first training module. The time from October 8 to October 14, 2018 is a rest period;
  • 10.15.2018-11.16.2018 – second training module. From November 19 to November 25, 2018, schoolchildren will be able to relax;
  • 26.11.2018-28(29).12.2018 – the last push before the holiday vacancies, which will take place from December 31 to January 10(13), 2019 inclusive;
  • 01/15/2019-02/15/2019 - a new period of study, which will end with holidays from February 18 to 25, 2019;
  • 02.26.2019-04.5.2019 - a module dedicated to mastering new knowledge, after which students will have a spring break from April 8 to April 14, 2019;
  • 04/15/2019-24(05/31/2019) – the last push before finishing the next academic year and going on summer vacation with peace of mind.

Vacations are periods of rest from studying for schoolchildren.

In Moscow, the vacation schedule is set by the city Department of Education. It is the same for all schools.

Autumn vacation

The period of autumn school holidays depends on the educational system adopted at the school.

Students have a quarterly break in the fall once: at the end of October - beginning of November. The holidays last one week.

Students have two trimester holidays in the fall: in October and November. Each holiday lasts one week.

November 6th will be an additional day off for the holiday week. This is due to the fact that Saturday, November 4, is National Unity Day. According to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, weekends in honor of public holidays that fall on Saturday or Sunday are transferred to the next working day. In 2017 it is Monday 6 November.

Cancellation of holidays

The administration of an educational institution can cancel the autumn holidays if the school has already been closed for quarantine this fall.

It is no secret that the formation of a child should take place gradually, with a minimum amount of negative stress. To reduce the pressure of responsibility on schoolchildren and help them recover for further studies, standards were established that determine how much time a child should study and how much rest. On the eve of the new school year, our article will tell you about when they begin and end. school holidays 2017–2018 academic year in Russia.

Who sets school holiday dates?

Based on research conducted by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, recommendations were formed that allow the average Russian schoolchild to fully learn and develop in the educational process. Based on these recommendations, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation annually creates recommended dates for school holidays for the entire academic year. The vacation schedule proposed by officials is recommended, but not final, because the final authority in determining the actual timing of school classes is the educational institution itself. This is done in order to exclude all kinds of force majeure situations.

The academic year throughout Russia is approximately the same. It starts on September 1 and lasts until the last Friday in May. However, our country is huge and it is simply unrealistic to create a curriculum that would be universal for all regions. Based on this logic, it was decided to leave the right to set vacation dates to the management of each educational institution individually. However, parents should be aware that their opinions may be taken into account when developing the curriculum for 2017-2018. The Parents' Committee may propose its own version of the timing of the school year and holidays, which school management is obliged to take into account by law. But the final decision is still made by the management of the educational institution.

School holiday schedule and dates 2017–2018

The final dates of the holidays in each educational institution in Russia will be known only by the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year, but preliminary information already allows us to guess on which days the school holidays of the next academic year are most likely to take place. In addition, when organizing school holidays, you should take into account the form of education in each educational institution separately. There are two such forms: by quarters and trimesters.

Important! All dates and vacation schedules indicated below are approximate, which means that specifically in your school, gymnasium or lyceum, vacation dates may differ from those given below.

Autumn holidays: training in quarters: from October 30 to November 6; training by trimester: from October 2 to 8 and from November 13 to 19.

Winter holidays (New Year's): in this case, the form of education plays practically no role, because children's winter holidays are formed so that they coincide with the rest period for adults in honor of New Year's (preliminarily from December 28 to January 10).

Spring break: training in quarters: from March 22–24 to April 1; training by trimester: most likely from April 9 to April 16.

Summer holidays: both forms of education imply the same end dates for the academic year: from May 25-28 to August 31.

Holidays for first graders

Children entering school in first grade are most vulnerable to stressful situations that may arise in an unfamiliar school environment. For this reason, additional holidays are held for first-graders, which most often fall at the end of February (in 2018 from February 19 to 26).

It is during this period that children often feel more tired and get sick more often. To avoid such phenomena, school management has the right to organize additional rest for first-graders, which, however, can also be canceled or have different start and end dates - it all depends on the decision of the school management.

Holidays, regardless of the time of year, the most favorite time for all students. Both first grade students and school graduates are waiting for them. The 2017-2018 school year St. Petersburg holidays, which all young St. Petersburg residents dream of, are no exception.

During the holidays, you can play a variety of exciting games with your peers, go out of town and enjoy nature, and also visit loved ones living in another city.

When do school holidays start?

Every year, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation draws up a schedule of school holidays, which is advisory in nature. Educational institutions develop their vacation schedules, taking into account the recommendations of a higher authority.

The question arises: why is this procedure repeated every year? The answer to this question is very simple. Weekends and holidays change every year, which requires constant adjustment of the educational process. Agree that it is not logical to set the start of the holidays on some holiday or day off.

At the beginning of each school period, the developed schedules are approved by the administration of educational institutions and brought to the attention of all students and their parents.

In different educational organizations, vacation dates may differ, despite the fact that teaching is conducted according to the same program. This applies to both the city of St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia.

The vacation schedule for 2017-2018 has not yet been approved by the Ministry of Education. This procedure takes place six months before the start of the educational process.

At the same time, this does not prevent you from independently calculating the beginning and end of the holidays, taking into account recent experience. In this process, it is important to take into account the dates of holidays and weekends, as well as the form of education at school.

Currently, two forms of education are common in schools in the Russian Federation:

  • by quarters;
  • by trimester.

Training by trimesters

If the old system has already been tested and is known to everyone, then the new form of training in trimesters is just beginning to operate in the Russian Federation. Let's try to figure out what its specifics are.

This training system was developed by Russian specialists involved in hygiene and training students in the Russian Federation. Scientists from a special research institute noticed that after five weeks of the educational process, students’ assimilation sharply decreases. This was the reason for the development of a new training system. At present, it is impossible to unambiguously assess the effectiveness of the new form. So far there are interim research results on this matter. Time will tell whether the choice of the trimester system was correct.

Vacation schedule for schools teaching in quarters

First in the academic year 2017-2018. there will be autumn holidays. They will begin at the end of October and last until the beginning of November. The end of the holidays during this period will be affected by National Unity Day, which will be celebrated on Saturday 11/04/17. According to existing legislation, the day off must be moved to 11/06/17, so the autumn holidays will last from 10/28/17 to 11/06/17 inclusive.

Winter holidays in St. Petersburg will begin, as in all educational institutions in Russia, at the end of December and will last until 01/10/18. Usually this is the first working day after the long January holidays. Thus, taking into account the experience of past years, winter holidays for schoolchildren will be within the range: 12/25/17 – 01/10/18.

Children entering 1st grade will be able to take advantage of additional days off. This was done so that the fragile children’s body could fully recover and be ready to receive new knowledge by January 10, 2018. As a result, the winter holidays for first-graders will begin six days earlier - 12/19/17 and end on 01/09/18.

Spring break will traditionally begin at the end of March and last until the beginning of April 2018. There will be no holidays in the country during this period, so these holidays will depend only on weekends. Based on the experience of past years, spring break will take place from 03/26/18 to 04/01/18.

Summer holidays usually take a full three months. This is the most fertile time for all schoolchildren in Russia. You can forget about textbooks for a while and completely devote yourself to relaxation.

In fact, summer weekends are approved in different educational organizations in different ways. There are educational institutions where vacations last 2-3 months. In addition, there are educational organizations that provide certain assignments during the summer. We must not forget that there are always students who fall behind the existing curriculum, so they are forced to improve their knowledge before the start of the next educational process.

Summer holidays should be spent meaningfully and profitably. If necessary, you can help your parents with household chores or start learning something new. You need to skillfully plan your free time in order to not only gain strength, but also do something useful.

Vacations in schools with training in trimesters

In such educational institutions, calculating vacation dates is much easier than in standard schools. Here training is conducted according to the 5+1 formula. The educational process lasts for five weeks, after which a week-long vacation begins. That is, every 35 days alternate with a week-long vacation. The exception is winter holidays. Here they completely coincide with schools in which training takes place in quarters.

The following table gives an idea of what holidays look like in a trimester school:

Holidays Term
Autumn 09.10.17 – 15.10.17 and 20.11.17-26.11.17
Winter 12/25/17 – 01/08/18 and 02/19/18 – 02/25/18
Spring 09.04.18 – 15.04.18
Summer 01.06.18 – 31.08.18

Possible deviations in the vacation schedule

Recently, schoolchildren from different cities of Russia have noticed that their vacation dates do not coincide. This may be due to many reasons, including the fact that in many schools in the Russian Federation the educational process proceeds at different speeds. That is, some educational institutions conduct training according to the schedule, others proceed ahead of schedule, and still others lag behind the established pace of the educational process. The latter may be due to various force majeure circumstances. It can be:

  • severe frosts, which were observed more than once in Siberia;
  • floods, not uncommon in the Far East;
  • epidemics of influenza and other diseases that have affected the Urals and Central regions of Russia in recent years.

Missing classes for the above reasons can significantly disrupt the educational schedule and cause not only a postponement of the start of the holidays, but even a reduction in them. For any changes to the vacation schedule, the opinions of teachers and, if necessary, the parent committee of the educational institution are taken into account.
