Why should there be a school uniform at school? Why do you need a school uniform?

Why do you need a school uniform?

Why do you need a school uniform?

Many parents, when bringing their child to first grade, are faced with the need to purchase a school uniform for their child. And, despite the fact that most mothers and fathers wore it themselves at one time, their attitude towards the form is completely ambiguous. Some people don’t like the very idea of “equalization”, some are not satisfied with the design or convenience of a particular form of a particular school (although globally they have nothing against), others, on the contrary, happily agree, since they see in the form a way out for their child due to the financial situation of the family... In a word, as many parents, so many opinions.

And children... children are excellent barometers and sensitively catch our adult moods. And if the mother herself could not stand the uniform in her school years and, gritting her teeth, puts it on her own child, it is difficult to expect a positive and respectful attitude towards uniforms from him (especially if the mother expresses her opinion out loud).

So, what are the pros and cons of school uniforms? Is it necessary, is it advisable, what problems does it solve, which ones does it not, and which ones, on the contrary, does it create?

Let's start with the bad.

Firstly, the form is, indeed, equalizing. Children have completely different figures, heights, and builds. Finally, they have different types of appearance. Thus, what suits one person will look completely ugly on another. To avoid this, you should be given the opportunity to choose a style within, say, a single fabric, color scheme and set of items (suits, skirts, vests - from the same fabric but with variations in cut for different figures). However, where is this seen, where is it heard, where is it done, who can afford it? Unfortunately, you can count such schools on one hand.

Secondly, the uniform should ideally be comfortable and beautiful. However, reality often makes its own adjustments: in many schools, the color scheme and fabric are not agreed upon with parents, but are made according to the principle “it just happened.” For example, they introduce a uniform of absolutely monstrous colors (red-green checkered) only because such fabric was purchased cheaply “through the director’s channels.”

Thirdly, the uniform oppresses children with its monotony. Every day is the same! This really gets boring, especially from that age when children become concerned about their appearance and want to be liked by their classmates. True, here inventive schoolchildren (and especially schoolgirls) will always find a way out - how to stand out and how to distinguish themselves. It’s good if they think of doing this using clothing parts. I remember what we did within the limits of what was permitted: the uniform was decorated with unusual collars and cuffs, and beautiful aprons were sewn. Girls will always find a way to decorate themselves. And the length! And the boys could always wear an unusual shirt, suspenders, a belt - whatever they wanted. It is much worse if other techniques are used to attract attention – behavioral ones.

And lastly, some schools make uniforms a disciplinary lever, a way to control children's behavior. If the administration’s position in matters of compliance with uniforms is excessively strict, this should alert you as parents: the main function of the school is to teach children, not to discipline, and if the emphasis is placed on the wrong thing, then it will not be easy to study there, because paying attention, most likely, will primarily focus not on the quality of studies, but on loyalty and “obedience.”

Now - about the good stuff. So, a school uniform allows you to solve the following problems.

First: thanks to the introduction of uniforms, children at school cannot impress each other with their clothes. This is a big plus for the educational process, because that’s not why they go to school, after all... I would like both children and parents to remember this. Children will find something to stand out, and it’s good (just great!) if it’s personal achievements and talents. Much more often it’s just banal phones, bags, writing instruments, outerwear, conversations on the topic “who has what kind of house, what kind of car,” going to each other’s houses and spending time together - children will have somewhere to “unwind” in addition to the sphere of clothing. The social and financial situation of different families is no secret to any of the children in the class, they talk about it now freely, and the children know as well (or even better) than we do what it costs. So, unfortunately, the form will not be able to “solve the problem of social inequality”. However, property inequality is much easier to bear when, at least during the educational process (and this is the main school function), everyone wears the same clothes. Just put yourself in their place: someone in a smart suit is having an important conversation with you, catching you in inappropriate clothes - a casual T-shirt or an old sweater... How will you feel? Now imagine the same conversation when you are in a business suit, not even that expensive. When will it be more comfortable?

Second: just 15–20 years ago, the financial situation was very tense for the vast majority of the population, and the uniform was a good way out of the situation for many. Our times - taking into account the crisis - promise to be no better, so a uniform can again be considered a good material help: after all, one set of clothes is cheaper than several. True, some schools manage to make a business out of this, and the uniforms turn out to be quite expensive, but this is on the conscience of the administration.

Third: children do not look like a motley mass, but a kind of integrity; this is useful both in the sense of aesthetics and in the sense of psychology - an additional point that unites the group into a team, allowing us to cultivate the so-called “corporate culture.” For example, the daughter of my friends studies in the UK, in her educational institution a uniform is mandatory (as in all “good” schools - these are traditions that have developed over centuries). And the girl (teenager!) is proud of her, just as she is proud of belonging to this educational institution in general. Indeed, the shape is very beautiful...

Fourth: not all children and their parents have taste, so modern schoolchildren are dressed simply monstrously, often both expensive and monstrously “in one bottle,” because aesthetics does not depend at all on the material capabilities of the family. And the uniform, if chosen well and well sewn, removes these moments.

Fifth: during puberty, girls actively seek to attract attention. With the help of everyday clothes, they sometimes get simply depressing results. Often girls come to classes in transparent blouses with translucent bras, or in such belted skirts, in which you absolutely cannot bend down - only squat (hello to the sixties!), or in jeans with a low belt, in which it is also better to stand straight like a tin soldier : any forward movement exposes the girl's panties and half of her butt to everyone. I can say with a 100% guarantee that if a girl is dressed exactly like this, then no matter what she says, her thoughts will not be about studying - just like the entire boy half of the class. And, as a result, the girls too. Don’t deceive yourself, physiology is physiology, especially generously fueled by hormones. And here the point is not in the high morality of the administration, but in the fact that they simply do not want to waste their time. As you can see, there are still more pros than cons, although not by much. However, you have the power to choose which arguments are more meaningful to you. After all, uniform is an inevitable given in many schools, so isn’t it better, without being able to change circumstances, to change your attitude towards them and see the positive where, at first glance, it is not and cannot be? And having accepted the situation, you can always turn it to your advantage: well, at least, it will be easier for you and your child to live - one less annoying and stressful moment.

One of the essay topics that is offered to schoolchildren is an argument on the topic “Why do we need a school uniform?” This topic is relevant because there are both supporters of uniform clothing and those who believe that this is an outdated tradition. The student is invited to express his opinion on this matter. The essay “Why do we need a school uniform” allows school management to also determine whether such a reform needs to be introduced in their educational institution, taking into account the opinions of students.

When they wore a uniform

If you look at old films, illustrations from history textbooks, students stood out from the crowd due to the fact that they wore special clothes. “We need a school uniform”, it should be noted that in the Soviet era, all schoolchildren were required to come to an educational institution in a single uniform.

And if you think about it, in those days, for many, the fact that everyone dressed the same was not perceived in a negative way, as it is with the modern generation. Why? Simply because in Soviet times there was a shortage of good quality clothing, not everyone had the money to purchase it. Therefore, for many, this was a solution: in this way, children of different social groups did not differ in appearance. And those who wanted to somehow stand out from the crowd complemented their clothes with jewelry or decorated their clothes (moderately).

Why was uniform uniform for students canceled?

In the discussion on the topic “Why do we need a school uniform”, it is also necessary to give arguments against the idea that schoolchildren should be dressed the same. One of the most important arguments is that in this way the freedom of expression of schoolchildren is limited. A single form depersonalizes and does not allow the student’s individuality to reveal itself.

Also, most people want to dress according to fashion. A school uniform involves simple elements of clothing with a classic cut. In Soviet times, students' clothes were predominantly dark colors, which for some is wrong, because childhood is all about bright colors. On the one hand, these arguments can be called reasonable. After all, appearance is one of the ways of self-expression. But what arguments do supporters of uniform clothing for students give?

Why do we need a school uniform: arguments for its introduction

The arguments given by supporters of this point of view are also quite weighty and convincing.

  1. A uniform uniform helps maintain discipline in the classroom during lessons.
  2. Democratic.
  3. Allows you to save time getting ready for school.
  4. Practical - usually the uniform is sewn from fabrics of non-marking colors.
  5. Hygienic - natural fabrics are used to create uniforms for schoolchildren.

Some of these arguments are worth considering in more detail in the essay “Why do we need a school uniform?”

How are discipline and clothing related?

One of the arguments of supporters of a single uniform is maintaining order in the classroom during lessons. At first glance, this argument seems strange. Well, how can clothes help maintain discipline?

Everything is explained very simply. Schoolchildren simply do not have the opportunity to discuss in class what their classmates are wearing. After all, for girls, fashion issues are one of the most discussed. The students do not look at each other, trying to figure out where they bought some item of clothing, and do not determine its cost.

Also, students must keep their uniform in order - after all, in simple classic styles, sloppiness will be immediately noticeable. And thanks to the fact that children do not have to think about and decide in the morning what to wear to school, the number of lateness to classes becomes less. Thus, a uniform form allows you to maintain discipline in the classroom.

Democracy is a component of a harmonious atmosphere in the classroom

One of the required points in the essay “Why do we need a school uniform” is an explanation of the point about democracy. This implies the availability of school uniforms for families of any income. Thus, through clothing, wealthier students will not show their wealth through their appearance.

In modern society, wealthy parents dress their children in clothes of expensive brands, although children of primary school do not pay attention to the cost of their outfits. But for other parents, this can cause negative reactions and biased attitudes towards such students, which they can pass on to their children.

And in older grades, teenagers are already consciously trying to demonstrate their status through their appearance, showing their superiority over children from less affluent families. And they, in turn, also show their negative attitude towards them. All this does not allow creating a harmonious and healthy atmosphere in the classroom. Therefore, a uniform school uniform avoids these problems, allowing students to stand out due to their talents and academic achievements.

Forming the right attitude towards appearance

But it also happens that parents and children do not understand why it is needed. Thanks to the fact that families do not demonstrate social status with the help of clothing and children do not try to show their superiority over others in appearance, the correct attitude towards clothing is formed. Children do not make a cult out of her, they do not believe that appearance is the main thing in a person.

They learn to appreciate the personality of the people around them and evaluate them by their actions. Girls have the opportunity not only to follow all fashion trends, but also to learn the finer art of choosing the right jewelry and accessories in order to diversify their image so that it does not look provocative. After all, girls often, in their desire to look fashionable, choose things that are not suitable for their age. Or they combine elements of clothing that are incompatible in style. And simple things of a classic cut, which make up the school uniform, have always been considered signs of a good sense of style.

School traditions

But opponents of uniform clothing for students often do not take into account such a holiday as the “last bell.” Namely, on this day, everyone tries to come as schoolchildren of Soviet times were dressed. After all, how beautiful white starched aprons with lace, snow-white cuffs, turn-down collars, and bows look! And on this day everyone dresses the same. And this doesn’t bother anyone. So why don’t parents like the fact that their child is always dressed neatly, tastefully and in accordance with his age? And all these requirements are met by a uniform uniform for students.

Of course, everyone decides for himself whether he wants the child to stand out from the crowd, or whether all the listed arguments are more important to him (democraticism, developing the right attitude towards appearance, etc.).

In the essay “Why do you need to wear a school uniform”, one of the arguments can be cited as an example of the alumni holiday. After all, it is necessary for a child to understand from an early age that what is more important is not what a person wears, but how he behaves in society.

Why do you need a school uniform?

Why do you need a school uniform?

In Russia, compulsory uniforms for students were introduced back in 1834, and abolished in 1992. What school uniform is and why it is needed - this became the theme of the grandiose anniversary celebration

The girls and boys of the school changed their usual costumes - and young ladies from the Institute of Noble Maidens and students of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, high school students and high school students of the 19th century, pioneers in ties and students in the uniform of the “School of Cooperation” walked along the corridors.

Guests of the holiday attended open lessons, where they could study according to the program of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum in a fine literature lesson or paint with starch paints prepared with their own hands in a chemistry lesson.

After lessons, guests were treated to intellectual games and the premiere of a musical about school uniforms, where in small skits teachers and students talked about the morals and traditions of education from different periods of Russian history.

A Brief History of School Uniforms

Institute of Noble Maidens

In 1764, Catherine II founded the "Educational Society of Noble Maidens", which later became known as the "Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens". The purpose of this educational institution, as stated in the decree, was “...to give the state educated women, good mothers, useful members of the family and society.”

Training and upbringing proceeded according to age. Girls of each age group wore dresses of a certain color: the youngest (5-7 years old) - coffee color, so they were called “coffee girls”, 8 - 10 years old - blue or blue, 11 - 13 years old - gray, older girls wore white dresses . The dresses were closed ("closed"), one-color, of the simplest cut. They wore a white apron, a white cape and, sometimes, white sleeves. Girls received an education that was advanced for Europe: reading, languages, basic mathematics, physics, chemistry, dancing, knitting, manners, music.

The most famous is considered to be the uniform of the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, a privileged educational institution for the children of nobles, from which Pushkin graduated. Children aged 10-12 years old were admitted to the lyceum, and high-ranking officials were trained from the students. The lyceum had a humanitarian and legal orientation, the level of education was equal to that of a university, and graduates received civil ranks from the 14th to the 9th grade.

Summer boarding uniform

Boarding houses for noble maidens - state and commercial - spread throughout Russia in the second half of the 19th century. Each educational institution adopted a uniform of its own color, but equally modest in appearance. Older girls were already taken out into the world, to balls and receptions, so that the young lady could find a “suitable match” and arrange her future life.

Since many girls lived in boarding houses permanently, in the summer they were allowed to change their everyday uniform to a lighter one - summer. Here are some of the summer boarding house options for walking. But even outside the educational institution, the girl had to look stern and touching - in a boater hat and a long dress.

Gymnasiums

The oldest Russian gymnasium is the Academic, founded in 1726. But the real heyday of gymnasiums dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when the Ministry of Public Education was formed. Gymnasiums began to appear throughout the Russian Empire. The uniform of high school students consisted of a cap, overcoat, tunic, trousers and a ceremonial uniform. In winter, when it was cold, they wore headphones and a hood. Each educational institution had different colors, piping, buttons and emblems. Teachers and supervisors strictly monitored compliance with all rules for wearing a suit, which were spelled out in detail in the charter of educational institutions.

There were classical, real, commercial, and military gymnasiums. And women's.

The gymnasium uniform for girls was approved only 63 years after the men's. In state gymnasiums, pupils wore brown dresses with a high collar and aprons. Mandatory turn-down collar and straw hat. By the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 160 girls’ gymnasiums. Upon completion, girls were given a certificate to become a home teacher.

Soviet uniform

In 1918, the gymnasium uniform was recognized as a bourgeois relic and was abolished. But in 1948 they returned to their pre-revolutionary form. The new Soviet uniform appeared only in 1962. It was already more like civilian clothes - without tunics, caps and belts. The uniform for girls repeated the uniform of the gymnasium, only it was much shorter. A black or white festive apron, lace collar, cuffs, white or black bows were required.

In the 70s, boys got a jacket tailored to look like denim, and older boys got a trouser suit. In the late 80s, school uniforms were in short supply; they were even sold using coupons. One of the reasons for the demand was its good quality and traditionally low price. Adults began to wear it as casual and work wear.

Compulsory school uniforms in Russia were officially abolished in 1992.

Modern uniform of the “School of Cooperation”

Most prestigious educational institutions have their own uniform, emphasizing the students' belonging to a certain environment. This is a worldwide tradition; the most prestigious educational institutions, for example, the Ivy League, which includes Cambridge and Oxford, have their own form.

Many parents, despite the fact that school uniforms have long become an obligatory attribute of educational life, are wondering: is a school uniform mandatory? When preparing your child for school, do you need to buy a uniform or can you do without it?

Parents and teachers, graduate students have many arguments for and against. Many people believe that compulsory wearing of a school uniform infringes on the rights and responsibilities of the individual. Others are confident that a school uniform organizes the student, improves discipline in the classroom, and increases the level of attention in class.

Why was school uniform introduced?

  1. To provide students with comfortable and aesthetic clothing in everyday school life.
  2. Eliminating signs of social, property and religious differences between students.
  3. Preventing students from developing psychological discomfort in front of their peers.
  4. Strengthening the general image of the educational organization, the formation of school identity.

Is school uniform compulsory when attending an educational institution?

Since the Federal Law “On Education in the Russian Federation” No. 273-FZ of December 29, 2012 (hereinafter referred to as the Law) has given educational organizations the opportunity to establish requirements for schoolchildren’s clothing (color, type, size, style, insignia, etc. ), questions regarding the need for school uniforms have become even more numerous.

From a legal point of view, if an educational organization has introduced a school uniform, then it is a necessary condition for attending school. The student’s responsibility is to comply with the Charter of the educational organization and the requirements of local regulations, for example, wearing a school uniform (Article 43 of the Law). Each parent who enrolls their child in 1st grade must familiarize themselves with the Charter of the educational institution against signature. If the Charter contains a clause stating that a school uniform is mandatory, then all students, as participants in the educational process, are obliged to comply with the school’s requirements - to wear a uniform.

In a situation where a student came to school without a uniform, he violated the requirements of the Charter of the educational institution. This situation should not entail such a measure as suspension from school. This is due to the fact that every citizen is guaranteed the right to education. Violations of the Charter of an educational institution may lead to disciplinary action. Most often, in school practice, it is enough to have a conversation with the student or his parents so that the student’s appearance meets the requirements of school etiquette.

It is worth noting here that the school must adopt a local act, taking into account the opinion of the student council, the parent council and the representative body of school employees and students. The introduction of clothing requirements should be made by the decision of all participants in the educational process.

Who determines what uniform children should wear?

This issue falls within the competence of the educational organization, which establishes the types of clothing (sports, formal, casual). Students' clothing may have distinctive signs of the school or class in the form of emblems, ties, and badges. The school can recommend buying clothes of a certain style or color, but does not have the right to demand that you buy a uniform in a specific store, indicating a specific manufacturer.

Special requirements for students' uniforms are provided for educational organizations implementing educational programs in the field of:

  • defense and security of the state;
  • ensuring law and order;
  • customs affairs, etc.

In this case, the rules for wearing uniforms and insignia are established by the founder of the educational organization (Article 38 of the Law).

Can schoolchildren be provided with uniforms for free?

Providing uniforms and other clothing (uniforms) to students at the expense of budgetary allocations of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation is carried out in cases and in the manner established by the state authorities of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, studying at the expense of budgetary allocations of local budgets - local government bodies (Article 38 Law). This means that some categories of schoolchildren can be provided with uniforms at the expense of budgetary funds, if this is provided for by the constituent entity of the Russian Federation.

The decision to introduce requirements for student clothing should take into account the material costs of low-income families (Letter of the Ministry of Education of Russia dated March 28, 2013 No. DG-65/08 “On establishing requirements for students’ clothing”). Thus, if a subject of the Russian Federation has established strict requirements for the form, then its responsibilities will include providing such a form to all low-income citizens.

The procedure for applying for a subsidy depends on the region of residence of the student’s family. Depending on the territory, you can apply for a subsidy either to the MFC, the district administration, or to the school.

  • Clothing must meet the hygienic requirements for clothing for children, adolescents and adults (SanPiN 2.4/71 1.1.1286-03).
  • Clothing must be appropriate for the weather, the location of the training sessions, and the temperature in the room.
  • It is not recommended to wear shoes, clothes with traumatic accessories, or antisocial symbols.
  • Appearance must comply with generally accepted standards of business style and be of a secular nature.

Of course, students who adhere to certain requirements for appearance comply with the rules of school life. The advantages of a school introducing the wearing of a school uniform are much greater than the disadvantages. Children need to feel that they belong to a certain group or team. This is successfully achieved through the introduction of school uniforms.

Is a school uniform required? This question is asked by thousands of children, parents and teachers around the world. Why has the issue of introducing a mandatory uniform school uniform become so urgent? Why can't society come to a consensus? We think that the reason lies in the contradiction between the desire for collective unity and the possibility of self-expression.

Three arguments FOR school uniforms

  • Creating a business environment in the classroom

Everyone knows that before the introduction of school uniforms, children could show up for classes in any clothes. And faded jeans with a pullover are not the worst option. Some girls, especially high school girls, wear short miniskirts, which are inappropriate at school. Reprimands and comments from school management do not always help. Therefore, the introduction of a uniform standard of clothing for schoolchildren helps solve this problem.

  • Smoothing social inequality

At school, children from families with different incomes can study in the same class. Some parents buy the best and most fashionable things for their daughter or son. Others buy the cheapest things at sales and stock. Because of this, children of poor parents feel insecure and their self-esteem decreases. And children of rich parents assert themselves at the expense of mom and dad’s money. Neither one nor the other is beneficial for the harmonious development of the child.

  • Formation in schoolchildren of good taste and the ability to wear business clothes

It's no secret that in adolescence, clothing preferences are marginal. Teenagers choose clothes that parents are embarrassed to look at. At the same time, the formation of taste remains entirely in the hands of the parents. But not all parents can and want to instill a sense of style in their children. Therefore, an officially approved school uniform will help a child navigate the world of fashion.

Three arguments AGAINST school uniforms

  • School uniforms deprive children of their individuality

Wearing the same clothes every day, looking exactly the same as all your classmates - is this what a modern teenager dreams of? In a world where it is possible to create your own style even for little money, many teenagers want to express themselves through clothing. To be fair, we note that children still have ample opportunities for self-expression outside of school.

  • Business attire is not always comfortable and practical

Schoolchildren are children, and children have a natural desire to move, play, run, roll in the snow, etc. Moreover, if the student is wearing a uniform, then the games become difficult. There is an increased chance of ruining your uniform, rubbing your trousers, or tearing your blouse. Primary school students, instead of being naturally active after school for this age, are forced to hold back, run and play less, for fear of tearing their uniforms and being punished for it.

  • High cost of school uniforms or low-quality materials

School uniforms should be made from high-quality natural materials with a small admixture of synthetics. But such materials are quite expensive, so school uniforms cost parents a pretty penny. Many schools take a different route - they order cheap school uniforms mainly made from synthetic materials. Such clothing does not allow the skin to breathe, which negatively affects the health of children.

Thus, the issue of introducing a unified school uniform is full of contradictions. It is difficult to give a definite answer to this, since many nuances must be taken into account. Let us only note that school uniforms have long been successfully introduced in many countries of the world, such as Great Britain or India. Here, students take their uniform with pride and truly love this form of clothing.
