The discovery of the above-mentioned gene can serve as an argument in favor of the hypothesis about the programmed nature of aging and death, i.e. phenoptosis, as opposed to the hypothesis about the simple accumulation of damage in the body over time, manifested in the aging of the body with a sad fatal end.

Programmed phenoptosis is best seen in organisms that reproduce once in a lifetime. Thus, the mayfly dies immediately after the reproductive act for the simple reason of the absence of an oral apparatus - it simply has nothing to eat. In the Adactylidium mite, the offspring gnaw their way out of the mother's body, causing her death. In other cases, immediately after sexual intercourse, a behavioral program is activated that causes the death of the organism (females of some species of spiders eat males after mating, bamboo dies as soon as it produces ripe fruits).

Let's leave aside the question of how the aging mechanism works (we described it in general terms above), and try to answer the question asked: why did nature arrange it so that a person ages and dies? By the word “nature,” of course, we must understand evolution. We need to answer the question: why (and who?) benefits from the death of an organism?

Death is not beneficial for the body itself. This means that it must be beneficial to the population of these organisms.

What is important for evolution is the continuation of life in general, and not the continuation of the life of a particular organism.

Random mutations of genes can be useful in changing environmental conditions - and then they become fixed, transmitted from generation to generation. Harmful mutations (or previously beneficial mutations that have become harmful under changed conditions) are eliminated from the population through the death of the organism. Evolution as a process of modification of organisms would not take place under conditions of immortality. Only because organisms died could evolution occur. When reproduction arose with the exchange of genetic information, death also arose. If organisms divide by simple division (bacteria) without changing genetic information, then theoretically, such organisms are immortal if stable conditions are created for them (there is no shortage of food or space). Limited resources do not make it possible to endlessly increase the number of ever-living organisms, when all generations that have ever existed live simultaneously. Or reproduction - then death. Or eternal life - but without reproduction. In the absence of opportunities for limitless expansion of life, there is no alternative to death. This does not mean that people should not strive to increase life expectancy by improving environmental conditions, fighting diseases and even changing the functioning of the corresponding genes, but it should be understood that this gives a qualitatively new character to human evolution and raises new ideological questions. So, the mortality of the organism ensures the immortality of the population, which is in constant evolutionary development.

Each of us, sooner or later, is faced with the feeling that life is meaningless, everything goes in circles, the understanding sets in: neither in twenty nor in forty years nothing will change, only health will begin to fail and more and more energy will be spent on everyday affairs, and life , actually, there is no need.
