Photographer Alexey Nikolaev is looking for ex-members in Afghanistan Soviet soldiers who converted to Islam and refused to return to the USSR.

Sergei (Nurmamad) Krasnoperov is 49 years old. A native of Kurgan, he served in Afghanistan for almost two years, but at the end of his term - in 1985 - he left the unit due to hazing, was captured by the Mujahideen, got married and after the withdrawal Soviet troops stayed to live in an unnamed village 20 kilometers from Chagcharan, the capital of the Ghor province. By local standards, Krasnoperov is a successful, wealthy man: he has two motorcycles and a car.

Sergey Krasnoperov. Registration card from the archives of the Committee for Internationalist Soldiers.

Sergei returns from Chagcharan to his village on a motorcycle.

Sergei Krasnoperov: “I was born in Kurgan. I still remember my home address: Bazhova Street, building 43. I ended up in Afghanistan, and at the end of my service, when I was 20 years old, I went to join the dushmans. He left because he did not get along with his colleagues. They all united there, I was completely alone - they insulted me, I could not answer. Although this is not even hazing, because all these guys were from the same draft with me. In general, I didn’t want to run away, I only wanted those who mocked me to be punished. But the commanders didn’t care. I didn’t even have a weapon, otherwise I would have killed them right away. But the spirits who were close to our unit accepted me.”

Lunch break in the team of assembly workers, which is also led by Sergei. His main place of work is a small local hydroelectric power station, where Krasnoperov is responsible for electrical engineering.

Sergei Krasnoperov: “True, they didn’t accept me right away - for about 20 days they locked me up in some small room, but it was not a prison, although there were guards at the door. They put on the shackles at night and took them off during the day - even if you find yourself in the gorge, you still won’t understand where to go next. Then the mujahideen commander arrived, who said that since I came myself, I could leave on my own, and I didn’t need shackles or guards. Although I would hardly have returned to the unit anyway - I think they would have shot me right away. Most likely, their commander tested me this way.”

Sergei’s team is installing a crushed stone production line in a stone quarry near Chagcharan.

Sergei Krasnoperov: “For the first three or four months I didn’t speak Afghan, but then gradually we began to understand each other. Mullahs constantly visited the Mujahideen, we began to communicate, and I realized that, in fact, there is only one God, just Jesus and Muhammad are messengers different faiths. I didn’t do anything with the Mujahideen - sometimes I helped with the repair of machine guns. Then I was assigned to a commander who fought with other tribes, but he was soon killed. I didn’t fight against Soviet soldiers - I just cleaned weapons, especially since the troops were withdrawn from the area where I was quite quickly.”

Sergey on his way home from work.

Sergei Krasnoperov: “The Mujahideen realized that if they marry me, then I myself will stay with them. And so it happened. I got married a year later, after that the supervision was completely removed from me; before, I wasn’t allowed anywhere alone. But I still didn’t do anything, I had to survive - I suffered several deadly diseases, I don’t even know which ones.”

Chagcharan is considered a troubled place. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) base is located near the city, and helicopters constantly circle over it.

Sergey Krasnoperov with children

Sergei Krasnoperov: “I have six children. There were more, but many died. They are all blond, almost Slavic. However, the wife is the same. Now I collected the documents and took them to Kabul to get a passport. First I’ll get it, and then we’ll see - if there’s money, I’ll go (home - RP). My mother is already quite old, I call her sometimes, and once she even came. There was a brother, but he was killed in a drunken fight - he was pushed, and he hit his head on the asphalt. Here they avenge blood for blood, but in Russia there are no such laws.”

Sergei Krasnoperov: “After the Americans leave completely, it will be better. Ukrainians (soldiers from the ISAF-RP contingent) are helping me now, and there are also Georgians. The Lithuanians, however, don’t really like us... I consider myself Russian, but what was it like in the USSR before? Everyone is equal! And Americans believe that everyone except them is second class. Even blacks are better for them than Afghans. I wouldn’t wish anyone to be in my place.”

Sergey Krasnoperov: “I want to buy a plot in the town. I earn $1.2 thousand a month, they don’t pay fools here that kind of money. The governor and my boss promised to help me, I’m standing in line. The state price is small - a thousand dollars, but then you can sell it for six thousand. It’s beneficial if I still want to leave. As they say in Russia now, this is business.”

There is quite a lot of information about how to Afghan war 1979-1989 dushmans treated Soviet soldiers. But there is almost no information about the presence of Afghan militants in Soviet captivity. Why?

An eye for an eye...

For a long time, the heroic image of the Soviet internationalist warrior was promoted in our country. Much remained behind the scenes, and only in the post-perestroika years did individual grains of information about back side war in Afghanistan. Then the public learned about the former Soviet soldiers, who voluntarily went over to the side of the Mujahideen, and about the atrocities that the latter committed with our prisoners, and about the cruelty that our soldiers and officers showed towards the local population...

Thus, journalist A. Nureyev was once told about a paratrooper officer who personally shot seven captured dushmans. The journalist was shocked: how could this be, after all, there is a Geneva international convention on the treatment of prisoners of war, ratified by the USSR in 1954. It states: “Prisoners of war must always be treated humanely... Prisoners of war may not be subjected to physical violence... Prisoners of war equally must always enjoy protection, especially from any act of violence or intimidation, from insults and the curiosity of the crowd. The use of reprisals against them is prohibited..."

If at the very beginning of the war there were virtually no acts of violence against prisoners and Afghans by Soviet military personnel, then the situation changed dramatically. The reason for this was the numerous atrocities the Mujahideen committed against our military. Soviet soldiers who were captured were subjected to sophisticated torture, skinned alive, dismembered, as a result of which they died in terrible agony... And it very often happened that after their death, their comrades in the unit went to the nearest village and burned houses there, killed civilians, raped women... As they say, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth...

Torture and execution

As for the captured dushmans, they were often tortured. According to eyewitnesses, prisoners, for example, were suspended in a rubber loop from a barrel tank gun, so that your toes barely touch the ground. Also

They could drive needles under their nails, as the Nazis did during the Great Patriotic War. IN best case scenario the prisoners were simply severely beaten. The role of the executioner was usually performed by some ensign who had great physical strength.

In the summer of 1981, during a military raid in the Gardez area, a detachment of paratroopers captured six Mujahideen. The commander gave the order to transport them by helicopter to headquarters. But when the helicopter had already taken off, the brigade commander from headquarters sent a radiogram: “I have nothing to feed the prisoners!” The detachment commander contacted the officer accompanying the prisoners, and he decided... to release them. A small nuance: at that time the helicopter was at an altitude of 2000 meters and was not planning to land. That is, the dushmans were simply thrown down from a great height. And when the last of them left the cabin, a ramrod from a Makarov pistol was driven into his ear... By the way, the episode of throwing prisoners from a helicopter was far from isolated.

Such things did not always go unpunished. The press received information about how a military tribunal sentenced the deputy commander of a regiment stationed in the Ghazni region and one of the company commanders to to the highest degree punishment for the execution of twelve captured Mujahideen. The rest of the participants in the execution received impressive prison sentences.

Murder or exchange?

Former special forces soldiers say that they were generally not very keen on taking the Mujahideen prisoner, since there was a lot of “fuss and hassle” with them. Often the “spirits” were killed immediately. Basically they were treated like bandits and interrogated with partiality. They were usually kept in prisons, and not in military units.

There were, however, special camps for Afghan prisoners of war. The dushmans were treated more or less tolerably there, since they were being prepared for exchange for Soviet prisoners. The Mujahideen bargained, demanding that the exchange be not one to one, but, say, for one “shuravi” - six Afghans. As a rule, a consensus was eventually reached.

No matter how much we are called to humanism, war is war. At all times, the warring parties did not spare their opponents, tortured prisoners, killed women and children... And violence, as a rule, only begets violence... Events in Afghanistan once again proved this.

At the age of eighteen, traveler Alexey Kotelnikov wrote to the military registration and enlistment office to be sent to serve in Afghanistan. I really wanted to go there! But every time he was refused: “We don’t need heroes!” 16 years have passed since the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, but Kotelnikov has not forgotten about his dream. Last year he finally visited this country and today he tells SK readers about his amazing journey.

Soviet legacy

— Most of all, I was afraid of an unfriendly attitude on the part of the Afghans - after all, they had been fighting with us for ten years. Nothing of the kind! They have great attitude to the Russians. For example, I was never allowed to spend the night in a tent. I deliberately took her with me, but every evening the Afghans dragged me to their home and provided me with dinner and lodging for the night. And every evening get-togethers! As soon as they find out that a foreigner has arrived, people gather from everywhere and start asking questions.

Many Afghans, especially in the north, speak Russian well. Some worked for Najibullah (former pro-Soviet president of Afghanistan - author's note), others studied in Russia.

They asked a lot of questions. The most painful topic for Afghans is how is it with women in Russia? Do Russian women really go without a burqa at all and are they really so affordable?

They talked about themselves. About how bad life was for them under the Taliban and how good it was under the Soviet Union. I was very surprised when I first heard the question: “Why did you leave? It was so good with you! Yes, there was a war, but at the same time there was almost free bread and gasoline, you provided cars, built roads and factories.” And the most interesting thing is that I heard this every day and from absolutely different people. It all boiled down to “how stupid we were when we fought with you.”

If a person is over 35 years old, he must have fought. Because the whole country was at war then, the only question was who was on whose side. And, as a rule, if there are 15 Afghans in the room with you, then ten of them fought on the side of the dushmans, and five on the side Soviet Union. They remember what kind of battles there were, showing each other their shot arms and legs. And all this is absolutely good-natured.

Later, when I was lying in an Afghan hospital, an outspoken dushman looked after me. I asked him:

- Why are you courting me? It’s written on your face that you fought against the Soviet troops!

“Of course,” he answers. - Three years. But we have this law: while the war is going on, rob and kill. The war is over - no one will lay a finger on the guest, everyone will only be happy to see him.

Traces of war

— When you drive through Afghanistan, there are pebbles along the roads - red and blue. For a long time I could not understand what they meant. It turned out that the red circle on the stone meant a minefield. In total, there are about 20 million mines left there, that is, one mine for every Afghan. They are, of course, gradually neutralized, but people and livestock continue to be blown up.

People

— If you go to Paris, you look at the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees. And you go to Afghanistan to see people. You look at them with your mouth open - this is such an unprecedented flavor! Outwardly, Afghans are very dignified - they somewhat resemble eagles. Their movements are graceful and unhurried.

What is striking is that everyone is very young. Middle age Afghan population - 19 years old! In addition, they are very active and cheerful, so you get the feeling that you are in the land of youth. And there are only men everywhere. There are practically no women on the street.

In general, the further you go south, the fewer women there are. For example, in Moscow there are mostly women on the street. Somewhere in Dagestan they are sitting at home. But in Afghanistan the limit is already reached. 70% of people are men. All positions in this country, even exclusively female ones, are occupied by men. Men work in hairdressing salons, and in cafes too. Women stay at home and only occasionally go out for shopping. They wear only a burqa, and, interestingly, a blue one.

Guardianship of the special services

“The only thing that gets in the way is the local security services.” If they understand that you are a tourist, then frantic guardianship begins. Somehow I managed to fall into the clutches of the special services and then for a whole week I could not escape from them. Afghanistan has a strange curfew - from ten in the evening to one in the morning. And I had to catch the eye of the police at that very time. They don’t seem to detain me, but they don’t let me go either - under the pretext of ensuring my safety. After that, my trip began to look like this: I wake up in some military unit, there they begin to introduce me to everyone - from a sergeant to a general. Once I was even invited to the local governor. I waited for an audience for two hours, after which I was taken into a room that resembled an office Russian director plant The governor, a rather young man, was sitting in the office and his retinue was standing. Very colorful personalities - outwardly the spitting image of Bin Laden and Basayev.

After all the official introductions, I was taken on a tour, accompanied by guards with machine guns. And so we walked around the city for several hours, after which we returned to military unit and they took me to the border of the next district. Other police officers met me there, and everything started all over again. I managed to get rid of the special services only in the city of Herat.

— I expected that Afghans live poorer. As in many other countries, there is a very large gap between urban and rural areas. Outwardly, Afghan settlements look really poor: there are unsightly adobe houses all around - you even get the impression that no one lives there. But as soon as you go inside, you see a completely different picture: very clean courtyards, about fifteen kids running around. There are no problems with food - those who are richer set luxurious tables, like for a wedding.

The fact is that Afghans are a very hardworking nation. As soon as another war ends, they begin to work, build houses and roads.

Cars

— There’s a joke: if you’re tired of your old car, don’t rush to throw it away. Come to Afghanistan - they will gladly buy it for a thousand dollars. True, they will reconstruct it in the Afghan way. First of all, they will install the springs from the truck. They will tear off the trunk lid, because four people can fit there well standing up. Another trunk will be attached to the roof - this will provide four more passenger seats. Thus, Afghan craftsmen manage to make a twenty-seater car out of an old five-seater Volga! And it will serve them for who knows how many years. Afghans don't throw away cars - they constantly repair them, thanks to which the service life of their cars is literally endless. You won’t see any kind of cars there - even old domestic “Zaporozhets” and “disabled cars”.

At the same time - huge amount brand new jeeps. In general, SUVs are the most popular cars in Afghanistan. You simply cannot get there in a simple car. It is in vain that they say that Russia has the most bad roads— in Afghanistan they are incomparably worse. The traditional Afghan road is an ordinary track in the middle of a field. Sometimes only a UAZ and a KamAZ can drive along it.
