Blizzard / German folk

One widow had two daughters; one was beautiful and hard-working, and the other was ugly and lazy. But the mother loved the ugly and lazy one more, while the other had to do all kinds of work and be Cinderella in the house. The poor girl had to sit outside by the well every day and spin yarn, so much so that her fingers bled from the work.

And then one day it happened that the whole spindle was filled with blood. Then the girl bent down to the well to wash it, but the spindle jumped out of her hands and fell into the water. She began to cry, ran to her stepmother and told her about her grief.

The stepmother began to scold her greatly and was so cruel that she said:

Since you dropped the spindle, then be able to get it back.

The girl returned to the well and did not know what to do now; and so out of fear she jumped into the well to get the spindle. And she felt sick, but when she woke up again, she saw that she was on beautiful meadow, and the sun shines above it, and thousands grow on it different colors. She walked further through the meadow and came to the oven, and it was full of bread, and the bread shouted:

Oh, pull me out, pull me out, otherwise I’ll burn - I’ve been baked for a long time!

Then she walked over and pulled out the loaves of bread one by one with a shovel.

She began to shake the tree, and apples fell to the ground like rain, and she shook the apple tree until there was not a single apple left on it. She put the apples in a pile and moved on.

She came to the hut and saw an old woman in the window, and she had such big teeth that she became scared, and she wanted to run away. But the old woman shouted after her:

Dear child, what are you afraid of! Stay with me. If you do all the work in my house well, it will be good for you. Just look, make my bed properly and diligently fluff up the feather bed so that the feathers fly up, and then it will snow all over the world; I am Mrs. Metelitsa.

Since the old woman treated her kindly, the girl’s heart became lighter, and she agreed to stay and join Mrs. Metelitsa as a worker. She tried to please the old woman in everything and each time fluffed her feather bed so hard that the feathers flew around like snowflakes; and therefore the girl lived well with her, and she never heard a bad word from her, and she had plenty of boiled and fried food every day.

So she lived for some time with Mrs. Metelitsa, but suddenly she became sad and at first she didn’t know what she was missing; but finally she realized that she was yearning for home, and although she felt a thousand times better here than there, she still longed to go home. Finally she said to the old woman:

I yearned for home, and although I feel so good here underground, I can’t stay longer, I want to go back up to my people.

Mrs. Metelitsa said:

I like that you are drawn home, and since you have served me well and diligently, I myself will take you there.” She took her hand and led her to the large gate.

The gate opened, and when the girl was under it, suddenly a strong golden shower began, and all the gold remained on her, so that she was completely covered with gold.

“This is for you for working so diligently,” said Mrs. Snowstorm and also returned to her the spindle that had fallen into the well.

Then the gate closed behind her, and the girl found herself upstairs again, on the ground, and very close to her stepmother’s house. And as soon as she entered the yard, the rooster crowed, he was just sitting on the well:

Ku-ka-re-ku!

Our golden girl is right there.

And she went straight into her stepmother’s house; and, because she was covered all over with gold, both her stepmother and stepsister received her kindly.

The girl told everything that happened to her. When the stepmother heard about how she achieved such great wealth, she wanted to achieve the same happiness for her ugly, lazy daughter.

And she sat her down by the well to spin yarn; and so that the spindle would also be in her blood, the girl pricked her finger, thrusting her hand into the thick thorns, and then threw the spindle into the well, and she jumped after it.

She, like her sister, ended up in beautiful meadow and continued along the same path. She approached the oven, and the bread screamed again:

Oh, pull me out, pull me out, otherwise I’ll burn - I’ve been baked for a long time!

But the sloth answered:

Why do I want to get dirty! - And she moved on.

She soon approached the apple tree, and the apple tree spoke:

Oh, shake me off, shake me off, my apples are long overdue!

But she answered the apple tree:

What else did I want, because an apple might fall on my head! - And moved on.

When she approached Mrs. Metelitsa’s house, she had no fear - she had already heard about her big teeth - and immediately hired herself as a worker. On the first day, she tried, was diligent in her work and obeyed Mrs. Metelitsa when she instructed her to do anything - the sloth kept thinking about the gold that she would give her. But on the second day she began to be lazy, on the third even more so, and then she didn’t even want to get up early in the morning. She did not make Mrs. Metelitsa’s bed properly and did not fluff her feather beds so that the feathers flew up. Mrs. Metelitsa finally got tired of this and refused to give her the job.

The sloth was very happy about this, thinking that now golden rain would fall on her.

Mrs. Snowstorm also led her to the gate, but when she stood under it, instead of gold, a full cauldron of resin overturned on her.

“This is your reward for your work,” said Mrs. Metelitsa and closed the gate behind her.

The sloth returned home covered in resin; and when the rooster sitting on the well saw her, he sang:

Ku-ka-re-ku!

Our dirty girl is right there.

But the resin remained on her for the rest of her life, and could not be washed off until her death.

Grandma Metelitsa
German folk tale

One widow had two daughters: her own daughter and her stepdaughter. My own daughter was lazy and picky, but my stepdaughter was good and diligent. But the stepmother did not love her stepdaughter and forced her to do all the hard work.
The poor thing spent all day sitting outside by the well and spinning. She spun so much that all her fingers were pricked until they bled.
And one day it happened that the whole spindle was filled with blood. Then the girl bent down to the well to wash it. But by chance the spindle jumped out of her hands and fell into the water. She began to cry, ran to her stepmother and told her what had happened. But the stepmother did not console her, she began to scold her strongly and said:
- Since you dropped the spindle, then be able to get it.
The sad girl returned to the well. She didn’t know what to do now, how to fulfill her stepmother’s order. All she could do was jump into the well. So she did. At first she felt sick, but when she woke up again, she saw that she was in a beautiful meadow. The sun was shining and thousands of different flowers grew around. She walked across the meadow forward, wherever her eyes were looking, and came to the stove. This oven was full of bread, and the bread shouted:

The girl came up and pulled out the loaves of bread one by one with a shovel. And then she went further and came to a tree, and it was full of apples. The tree said to her:

She began to shake the tree, and apples began to rain down on the ground. She shook the apple tree until all the apples fell from it. And she put the apples together and moved on. A girl came to the hut. In the window she saw an old woman whose teeth were so big that the girl became scared. She wanted to run away, but the old woman shouted to her:
- Dear child, what are you afraid of! Stay with me. If you do all the work in my house well, it will be good for you. Just make sure to make my bed properly and carefully fluff the feather bed so that the feathers fly away. Then it will snow all over the world. I am Mrs. Metelitsa.
Since the old woman treated her kindly, the girl decided that she was not as scary as she seemed, and her heart became lighter. She agreed to stay and be a worker for Mrs. Metelitsa. The girl tried to please the old woman in everything. Each time she fluffed her feather bed so hard that the feathers flew around like snowflakes. And therefore the girl lived well with her. She never heard a bad word from her mistress, and there was plenty of boiled and fried food every day.
So the girl lived with the old woman, everything was fine. Yes, suddenly one day she became sad. At first she didn’t know what was bothering her so much. And then she finally realized that she felt sad being away from her home. And even though Mrs. Metelitsa’s life was full and calm, the girl really wanted to go home. Finally she said to the old woman:
- I yearned for my home. I may feel so good here underground, but I can’t stay here any longer. I want to go back upstairs - to my people.
Mrs. Metelitsa answered her:
- I like that you are drawn home. If you have served me well and diligently, then I myself will take you upstairs. “She took the girl by the hand and led her to the large gate.
The gates opened. When the girl passed under them, she was showered with golden rain. And all the gold remained on it so that it was completely covered with gold.
“This is for your diligent work,” said Mrs. Snowstorm and returned to her the spindle that had fallen into the well.
The gate closed, and the girl found herself upstairs, very close to her stepmother’s house. As soon as she entered the yard, the rooster, which was sitting right on the well, immediately crowed:
- Ku-ka-re-ku! Our golden girl is right there.
And she entered the house to her stepmother. Because she was covered all over with gold, both her stepmother and stepsister received her very kindly. The girl told what happened to her. They listened to her carefully. And after such a story, the stepmother wanted it for her own daughter. Ugly and lazy, the same happiness and wealth. The stepmother sat her daughter down at the well to spin yarn. So that the spindle would also be in her blood, she pricked her finger on a thorn bush. And then she threw the spindle into the well and jumped after it.
Like her sister, she found herself in a beautiful green meadow and set off along the same path. I went up to the oven, and the bread screamed, just like in last time:
- Oh, pull me out, pull me out quickly, otherwise I’ll burn - I’ve been baked for a long time!
But the sloth answered:
- Why do I want to get dirty! - And she moved on.
She soon approached the apple tree, and the apple tree spoke:
- Oh, shake me off, shake me off, my apples are already ripe!
But she answered the apple tree:
- Look what you want, because an apple might fall on my head! - And she moved on.
Finally, when she approached the house of Mrs. Metelitsa, she had no fear - she had already heard about her big teeth. She immediately agreed to become a worker. On the first day she tried, was diligent in her work and obeyed Mrs. Metelitsa. When the mistress entrusted her with tasks, the sloth kept thinking about the gold that she would receive. But on the second day she became lazier, she was not used to working. On the third, even more, and then I didn’t even want to get up early in the morning. She did not make Madame Metelitsa’s bed as she should and did not fluff her feather beds so that the feathers flew up. In the end, Mrs. Metelitsa got tired of this, and she refused the sloth a job. The girl was very happy about this. She thought that now golden rain would fall on her. Mrs. Blizzard led her to the same gate, but when the girl passed under it, it was not gold that poured on her, but a huge cauldron of resin that overturned.
“This is your reward for your work,” said Mrs. Snowstorm and closed the gate behind her.
The sloth returned home covered in resin. When the rooster sitting on the well saw her, he began to sing:
- Ku-ka-re-ku! Our dirty girl is right there.
But the resin remained on her for the rest of her life, and could not be washed off until her death.

Of all the authors who rewrote folk tales and created their own stories based on them, the Brothers Grimm are among the most famous. From their pens came many revered literary works, and "Grandma the Blizzard" (a German folk tale), embodied in literary form, is no exception. Let's consider it summary, characteristics of the main characters, and also try to do a little analysis of the work.

“Grandma Blizzard” (German folk tale): plot summary

So, as usual, one widow had two daughters: her own and her stepdaughter. It goes without saying that the first one was an absolute lazy girl, and the second one was a hard-working girl. “Grandma Blizzard” (German folk tale), a summary, among other things, begins with the contrast between two daughters. By the way, this approach is also observed in Russian folk tales, which will be discussed in the analysis section of the work.

The stepdaughter spent all day long sitting in the yard and spinning yarn. Her fingers were completely punctured by the spindle, so much so that they were constantly bleeding. It so happened that one day the poor thing noticed that the spindle was stained with blood. He needed to be washed, and she went to the well to draw water. But then the unexpected happened - the spindle fell down.

This was followed by a scolding from her stepmother; the girl decided to jump into the well to pull out the spindle. "Granny Snowstorm" ( German fairy tale) the summary continues with the fact that it is from this moment that the adventures of the main positive heroine begin, which will lead to a logical outcome. But the girl still has many challenges ahead, quite serious ones at that, from which she will emerge, as they say, with honor.

Folk tale “Granny Snowstorm”: the adventures of a hard-working girl

After jumping into the well, to her great amazement, the girl found herself not in the water, but in a green meadow. Her surprise knew no bounds when she went further.

Then she saw a stove in which there was huge amount baked breads. They became so hot that they could no longer be inside the brazier, and they asked the girl to pull them out. Of course, she took a shovel and pulled them out.

Further, as “Granny Blizzard” (German folk tale) tells, she came across an apple tree, bent under the weight of ripe fruits. They also asked the girl to shake them off, since they were completely ripe. And this is what our heroine did.

Then she came to a small house, where she was met by an old woman with big teeth. The girl was a little scared at first, but when she saw good attitude to myself, calmed down.

The old woman said that her name is Grandma Blizzard, and when her feather bed is fluffed up so that the fluff flies, then it goes in the human world fluffy snow. She said that from now on the girl should deal with this matter.

Grandma's reward

So our heroine decided to stay and live with the old woman, constantly doing housework. However, despite the fact that her life was much better here, she began to feel homesick and asked Metelitsa to let her go. The grandmother replied that the girl kind heart, and, accordingly, the reward for the work will be impressive.

She led the girl to the gate, and when she passed through it, a rain of gold fell on her. The girl returned to her native place, and the cockerel who saw her shouted that the girl was walking all covered in gold.

Lenivitsa

Having looked at this, the stepmother decided to send the lazy girl to Metelitsa so that she too could acquire gold. But along the way, the girl refused to help both the stove and the apple tree. Arriving at Metelitsa’s house, on the first and second days she still managed to fluff up the feather bed somehow (she remembered about the reward), but on the third day she refused to get out of bed at all.

Natural result

Then the grandmother decided to “reward” her too. The sloth thought that gold would also fall on her, but instead she received a ladle of black soot. The cockerel, seeing her return, shouted that the “blackie” was returning. No matter how she tried to wash herself from soot, nothing happened, and she remained a black man.

Brief Plot Analysis

Here we briefly analyzed the work. Probably, based on the plot, many will understand that “Granny Snowstorm” (German folk tale) is very reminiscent of Russian folk tales, which, by the way, were created much earlier. With all this, the work itself seems to be cobbled together from two classic Russian stories, isn’t it?

Obviously, in the fairy tale “Grandmother the Blizzard,” the Brothers Grimm based the summary on such famous works Russian epics, such as “Geese-Swans” (meeting with the stove and apple tree) and “Morozko” (jumping into the well, fluffing the feather bed of the Metelitsa and reward).

Of course, based on the above, this could be called plagiarism, but there is one “but” here. The fact is that most critics classify the Brothers Grimm not so much as writers of fairy tales, but as retellers and distributors of classic stories associated with folk epic. Agree, it is simply impossible to call this fairy tale purely German. Not to mention Russian mythology and epic, such stories can be found in many literary works of any nationality and in any culture.

However, as is probably already clear, this does not make the work itself any less interesting, especially since it was written in simple language, designed for a children's audience. But the conclusions here are clearly “adult”. After all, this fairy tale can be attributed precisely to those works that condemn laziness. And flexibility and hard work will always be rewarded, even if you don’t expect it at all.

Naturally, laziness and unwillingness to help one’s neighbor only lead to the fact that the reward will be appropriate (as in the case of the lazy girl). And this, I must say, for many children can become an object lesson demonstrating how to treat others and work.

One day a girl noticed that her spindle was stained with blood. She wanted to wash him and bent over the well. But the spindle slipped out of her hands and fell into the water. The girl cried bitterly, ran to her stepmother and told her about her misfortune.

“Well, if you managed to drop it, manage to get it,” answered the stepmother.

The girl did not know what to do, how to get the spindle. She went back to the well and jumped into it out of grief. She felt very dizzy, and she even closed her eyes in fear. And when I opened my eyes again, I saw that I was standing on a beautiful green meadow, and there were many, many flowers around and the bright sun was shining.

The girl walked along this meadow and saw a stove full of bread.

- Girl, girl, take us out of the stove, otherwise we will burn! - the loaves shouted to her.

The girl went to the stove, took a shovel and took out all the loaves one by one.

- Girl, girl, shake us off the tree, we have long since matured! - the apples shouted to her.

The girl approached the apple tree and began to shake it so much that the apples rained down on the ground. She shook until not a single apple was left on the branches. Then she collected all the apples in a pile and moved on.

And then she came to a small house, and an old woman came out of this house to meet her. The old woman had such huge teeth that the girl was scared. She wanted to run away, but the old woman shouted to her:

- Don't be afraid, dear girl! Better stay with me and help me with the housework. If you are diligent and hardworking, I will reward you generously. Only you have to fluff my feather bed so that the fluff flies out of it. I’m a snowstorm, and when fluff flies from my feather bed, it’s snowing for people on the ground.

The girl heard the old woman speaking kindly to her and stayed with her. She tried to please Metelitsa, and when she fluffed the feather bed, the fluff flew around like snow flakes. The old woman fell in love with the diligent girl, was always affectionate with her, and the girl lived much better at Metelitsa than at home. But she lived for some time and began to feel sad. At first she didn’t even know why she was sad. And then I realized that I missed my home.

Then she went to Metelitsa and said:

“I feel very good with you, grandma, but I miss my people so much!” Can I go home?

- It's good that you miss home:

it means you have a good heart,” said Metelitsa. “And because you helped me so diligently, I myself will take you upstairs.”

She took the girl by the hand and led her to the large gate.

The gates opened wide, and when the girl passed under them, golden rain poured down on her, and she was completely covered in gold.

“This is for your diligent work,” said Grandma Metelitsa; then she gave the girl her spindle.

The gate closed, and the girl found herself on the ground near her house.

A rooster was sitting on the gate of the house. He saw the girl and shouted:

Our girl is all in gold! The stepmother and daughter saw that the girl was covered in gold, and they greeted her kindly and began to question her. The girl told them everything that happened to her.

So the stepmother wanted her own daughter, a sloth, to also get rich. She gave the sloth a spindle and sent her to the well. The sloth deliberately pricked her finger on the thorns of a rosehip, smeared the spindle with blood and threw it into the well. And then she jumped in there herself. She, too, like her sister, found herself in a green meadow and walked along the path. She reached the stove, the bread and they shouted to her:

- Girl, girl, take us out of the stove, otherwise we will burn!

- I really need to get my hands dirty! - the sloth answered them and moved on.

When she passed by the apple tree, the apples shouted:

- Girl, girl, shake us off the tree, we have matured long ago!

- No, I won’t shake it off! “Otherwise you’ll fall on my head and hurt me,” the sloth answered and moved on.

A lazy girl came to Metelitsa and was not at all afraid of her long teeth. After all, her sister had already told her that the old woman was not evil at all. So the sloth began to live with grandmother Metelitsa. On the first day, she somehow hid her laziness and did what the old woman told her. She really wanted to receive the award! But on the second day I started to feel lazy, and on the third I didn’t even want to get out of bed in the morning. She didn’t care at all about Blizzard’s feather bed and fluffed it so poorly that not a single feather flew out of it. Grandma Metelitsa really didn’t like the lazy girl.

“Come on, I’ll take you home,” she said to the sloth a few days later.

The sloth was delighted and thought: “Finally, the golden rain will rain on me!”

Blizzard led her to a large gate, but when the sloth passed under it, not gold fell on her, but a whole cauldron of black tar poured out.

- Here, get paid for your work! - Snowstorm said, and the gates closed.

When the sloth approached the house, the rooster saw how grimy she had become, flew up to the well and shouted:

- Ku-ka-re-ku! Look, people:

Here's the dirty one coming to us! The sloth washed and washed, but could not wash off the resin. So it remained a mess.
