Little yellow men from Despicable Me.

The color scheme of a film is as integral a part of modern cinema as dialogue, character development, cinematography or sound. Sometimes the color of a character’s costume determines not only his social or nationality, but also the mood or even attitude towards other characters. Viewers are accustomed to white rather on the side of the “good” ones, but don’t expect good from black, red alerts you to danger, and green relaxes you. The color yellow has no clear interpretation in cinema. On the eve of the appearance on the big screens of yellow dwarfs in “Minions” and the Yellow Hornet in “Ant-Man”, we remembered a few more memorable characters yellow, and paint alone is clearly not enough for them.

Submarine

Still from the cartoon "Yellow Submarine"

The legendary Fab Four The Beatles has many recognizable screen incarnations, the silhouettes of the musicians, their hairstyles, and the stylized covers of the group’s albums cannot be confused with anything. Not last place in the collection of artifacts from the history of the Beatles, a painted yellow submarine. Along with its famous passengers and their leader, young Fred, the submarine went against the Blue Meanies, who had taken over the musical land of Pepperland. Armed with the hits of Lennon and McCartney, the boat breaks through the resistance of the villains and restores peace and harmony in the magical land.

Taxi

Still from the movie "New York Taxi"

In the story of the color yellow in cinema, it is unusually difficult to get past the taxi, and therefore the Luc Besson franchise. But here's the problem - in France taxis are not painted in yellow, so we were forced to choose New York cars from the Hollywood remake of “New York Taxi” as our heroes. The movie, I must say, turned out to be terrifying - neither Queen Latifah nor Jimmy Fallon are suitable for roles in a big movie, to put it mildly, and although the film recouped the money invested in it at the box office, there was no sequel. In the absence of acting, the audience can still enjoy the racing of yellow cars - and that's the bread.

Ivy

Still from the film "The Mysterious Forest"

Before he finally went crazy, M. Night Shyamalan was considered the most promising director in Hollywood at the turn of the century. Fascinating stories, phenomenal ability to create a frightening atmosphere, incredible heroes and fantastic somersaults - it all ended in the “Mysterious Forest”, last movie, where Shyamalan is still "cake". The main characters of the film live in a small settlement, which is surrounded by a forest with monsters. It is believed that only the color yellow scares off monsters, and therefore residents wear lemon-colored raincoats. But even this attire does not save when blind Ivy goes to a neighboring village to get medicine for her lover.

Yellow bastard

Still from the film "Sin City"

The gloomy “Sin City” by Robert Rodriguez allows rare characters to stand out from the black and white palette with some kind of spot of color, but not the maniac nicknamed the Yellow Bastard. In the third big chapter of this movie comic, policeman Hartigan meets with his Nemisis - a criminal whom he once disfigured, but did not finish off. Now, with the power to kill with impunity, the Yellow Bastard threatens to kill the only person, not indifferent to Hartigan. This means that someone must stop evil, even at the cost of their own life.

Bumblebee

Promotional shot for the film "Transformers"

Giant robots choosing the Earth as the site of their destructive confrontation is, of course, great, but even the most cynical viewer of Michael Bay's Transformers first of all dreamed of having a friend like Bumblebee (okay, some first dreamed of Megan Fox, but then be sure to talk about Bumblebee). Judge for yourself - a robot that turns into a powerful fashionable car, unable to speak and communicating only through songs through the radio, fearless and ready for self-sacrifice. Ideal friend! Should I mention that he is also cute yellow?

The Simpsons

Still from the cartoon "The Simpsons Movie"

We simply could not help but remember the most famous animated family. Viewers have been asking why the Simpsons are yellow for decades, but no one can give you a definite answer. But there are several versions, and you can stick to any of them. At the very beginning, the author of the animated series

If you pay attention to both old and new cartoons, you can trace an interesting trend - artists are increasingly populating their imaginary worlds with one-eyed heroes. Some are forgotten, while others become an integral part of modern pop culture. So let's try to remember those characters to whom no one will ever say: “Keep your eyes open!”

Verlioka. "Verlioka" (1957)

Main actor Soviet fairy tale was the one-eyed Verlioka, who frightened him with his bad character all the inhabitants of the forest. He offended the Hedgehog, deprived the Drake of his tail, almost crushed the Acorn, tore the Rope, however, the last straw was the kidnapping of a village girl. And yet, thanks to cunning and ingenuity, fairy-tale heroes defeated the villain.

Kang and Kodos. The Simpsons (1989–present)

The second position on our list is occupied by two characters. Octopus aliens from the fictional planet Rigel VII appear in all of The Simpsons' Halloween specials. Kang and Kodos are brother and sister who, despite their gender differences, speak in low male voices. They actively use such strange technologies as, for example, the fertilization ray.

Monster. "The Beast" (1990)

This domestic cartoon tells about the life of a cute Beast in the most ordinary communal apartment. The shaggy, one-eyed monster wore glasses, knew how to cast magic, and for lunch he cooked bones for himself in the common kitchen. One of his neighbors was clearly not happy with such cohabitation and constantly mocked the Beast, while the second, Aunt Masha, always stood up for him.

Fashum. "The Adventures of Aladdin" (1994 - 1995)

In one of the episodes, Aladdin and his company find themselves in a treasury that is simply bursting with excess wealth. It would seem that take whatever you want, however, the greedy Fazir only liked the diamond eye of the stone statue of the giant Fashum. After losing his precious eye, the giant comes to life and begins to seriously “press” the heroes of the series.

Magnemite. "Pokemon" (1997 - present)

Only in the country rising sun one of the cartoon characters could be a creature with one eye, magnets and bolts screwed into its head. Magnemite's debut came in the first season of the series, which at one time caused quite a stir in Russia. A strange Pokemon in the story begins to feed tender feelings to his “colleague” Pikachu, however, after several unrequited signs of attention, his romantic mood fades away. I should have been more persistent, more persistent...

Leela Turanga. "Futurama" (1999 - 2013)

A strong, independent and, as a result, lonely girl is one of the main characters of the recently closed Futurama series. Lila is a mutant, but all her physical deviations boil down to the presence of one big eye instead of two, which, by the way, does not make her any less attractive. Plus she's in great shape physical fitness! Holds the position of captain spaceship courier company Planet Express.

Sheldon Plankton. "SpongeBob Square Pants"(1999 - present)

The main antagonist of the series simultaneously combines a tyrant with inflated self-esteem and a person suffering from an inferiority complex. As the owner of the Slop Bucket restaurant, which is unattractive to visitors, Plankton is constantly trying to steal the secret recipe for the Krabby Patty, a hit dish of the competing catering establishment, the Krusty Krab. True, his plans are constantly interfered with by the main character of the cartoon SpongeBob. Married to a computer named Karen.

Cyclops. "Hercules" (2001)

And then on our list classic example one-eyed character. The role of one of Hercules’ opponents in the Disney cartoon of the same name was played by Cyclops, who appeared closer to the end and not weakly “hung” the main character. The latter by this moment had lost all his divine powers, so the intense battle forced the spectators to stop eating popcorn for a while and, with their mouths open, carefully monitor what was happening. In the same picture you can see the goddesses of fate Moira, one of whom also suffers from an incomplete set of eye sockets.

Mike Wazowski. "Monsters, Inc." (2002)

The spherical green monster with small horns became one of the two main characters in the cartoon “Monsters, Inc.” Wazowski talks a lot and is often nervous, but behind the mask of cynicism and indifference lies a sensual nature. By the way, the object of Mike's affection is also the owner of one eye. Wazowski appeared on the big screen for the second time in the prequel “Monsters University” (2013).

Agent Wendy Pickley. "Lilo and Stitch" (2002)

At the beginning of the film, Agent Pickley tries to catch the escaped experiment 626 (Stitch), but then becomes his friend. It is a thin, greenish-yellow alien with three legs, three long fingers, a wide mouth, two purple tongues, and one large eye. Appearance is far from Wendy's only oddity. Despite belonging to male, he just loves to wear women's clothes and wigs. It's all strange, strange... Agent Pickley also returned to the audience in the series based on the original film.

AUTO. "WALL-E" (2008)

The robot assistant to the captain of the Axiom essentially served as a navigator. Strict adherence to the instructions did not allow AUTO to return the ship to the ground, which, as can be seen in the recording of another Eva robot, became quite suitable for life. On this basis, the interests of the main characters collided. AUTO locks the captain in the living compartment and takes command of the Axiom into his own..um..hands. The character can hardly be called a clear antagonist, since he simply obeyed the a113 program and stuck to the course laid out in it.

Professor Rrrrr. "Alice's Birthday" (2009)

And again, Russian animators spoil us with a character who fits perfectly into today's company. A specialist in dead languages, Professor Rrrrr looks like an anthropomorphic green kitten with one eye. Together with Alice, they find themselves in a country that suspiciously resembles the USSR in the 1960s, and go in search of a cosmodrome. Throughout the story, Rrrrr comes to the rescue more than once main character, including helping her escape from prison.

BEAN. "Monsters vs. Aliens" (2009)

Ostilisin Bicarbonate Benzoate or B.O.B for short. was born as a result of crossing a genetically modified tomato and a dessert mayonnaise soaked in chemicals. The lack of a brain of this shapeless and gelatinous “jellied meat” does not at all prevent him from being the real life of the party. Perhaps B.O.B. not the most outstanding monster, but a brilliant plan, as a rule, matures from him. He also appeared in the series of the same name, which continues the events of the cartoon.

Tank. Ice Age 3: Age of the Dinosaurs (2009)

Appearing only in the third part " Ice Age» weasel Buck leads continuous struggle for existence in cruel world prehistoric reptiles. After the fight with the dinosaur Rudy, the hero lost his right eye and became a little mentally unstable, which, of course, could not but affect his behavior. So, the eccentric Buck began to “talk” to the stone, as if to mobile phone, and even married a pineapple.

Fifth. "9" (2009)

This year has definitely been rich in one-eyed characters. A little cowardly, but kind, the doll wins the love of the audience from the first minutes of her appearance on the screen. Possessing a talent for sewing, Five sews the main character’s severed hand back on. Previously, he was a doctor who saved the Scientist from a terrible disease and until the last helped wounded soldiers during the war with the machines. By the way, in the Russian dubbing, Fifth speaks in the voice of rapper Guf.

Stewart. "Despicable Me" (2010)

After the premiere of the film "Despicable Me" the minions became real cultural phenomenon. One of these funny yellow men is named Stuart, and he differs from his colleagues by having only one eye. Lived in the Arctic with Bob and Kevin, then worked for Scarlett Overkill and Gru. In addition, Stewart appears in short films, as well as the animated films Despicable Me 2 (2013) and Minions (2015).

Iris Klops. "Monster School" (2010)

The series is essentially a kind of advertising for a series of fashion dolls of the same name. Iris's parents are Cyclops, which, of course, could not but affect appearance their daughters. She has a big one green eye, green skin and dark green hair color. The friendly but slightly awkward girl is interested in astronomy, loves looking at the stars at her father's observatory and is dating a...ahem...bull guy. IN literally words. Well, what do you want, this is a school of monsters after all!

Deathstroke. Young Justice League (2010–present)

Slade Wilson, known in narrow circles under the creative pseudonym Deathstroke, lives in the fictional “universe” of DC Comics, so the appearance of the character in other cartoons of the company is quite natural. The brutal mercenary, despite his visual inferiority, skillfully handles firearms and poses a fairly serious threat.

Shockwave. "Transformers Prime" (2010 - 2013)

It is worth noting that this character appears not only in the Transformers Prime series, but also in other films in this line. With a hexagonal head and one single eye, the Decepticon is an excellent, cold-blooded strategist, making him a formidable opponent for the Autobots. Shockwave became famous as a brilliant scientist, for whom “good” and “right” are only what is logical, and any emotions are just a sign of weakness.

Kukulka. "Kumi-kumi" (2012)

The last on our list, in fact, like the first, was a character created by domestic animators. Strange one-eyed glove-shaped creature blue fits harmoniously into the crazy world of the series. Not being the main character, Kukulka, nevertheless, quite often appears on the path of Yusi, Juga and Shumadan (these are the names of the main characters, and not at all the words of a terrible spell), finds herself in funny situations and diligently matches the image of “bee-bee-mishna” darlings."

Cartoon creators often put glasses on their characters. Thus, they complement the unique image of the cartoons. In our selection we present 10 cartoon characters who cannot be imagined without glasses.

1 Simon, "Alvin and the Chipmunks"

4 Mom, “Adventures in Prostokvashino”

The story about a boy, his dog Sharik and cat Matroskin won the hearts of viewers a long time ago.
