TPU is one of the large advanced training centers Russia, the only university in the Asian part of Russia included in the top five technical universities countries . Received international recognition as a full member international organizations: European Association of Research Management and Administrations (EARMA), Conderence of Engineering Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER), Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research (CLUSTER), European University Association (EUA).

Classes began on October 9, 1900, the first lecture (on analytical geometry) was given by Professor V.L. Nekrasov. D. I. Mendeleev took an active part in the creation of the institute and especially its chemical department.

In 1917, Tomsk Institute of Technology Emperor Nicholas II" was renamed "Siberian Tomsk Technological Institute".

Institute after 1917

In 1925 it was renamed the Siberian Technological Institute (STI). A research institute of applied physics was created.

In 1930, STI was divided into five institutes, three of which remained in Tomsk (Siberian Mechanical Engineering Institute, Siberian Chemical Technology Institute, Tomsk Electromechanical Institute of Engineers railway transport), Siberian Construction was transferred to Novosibirsk, and Siberian Metallurgical - to Novokuznetsk.

In 1934, three Tomsk institutes (mining, mechanical engineering and chemical technology) were united into the Tomsk Industrial Institute.

In 1944 it was renamed “Tomsk polytechnic institute».

In 1941-1946 during the Great Patriotic War many factories for the production of tanks and weapons were headed by TPI graduates. Gorbachev Timofey Fedorovich (graduate of the Siberian Technological Institute (TPU), 1928) headed the department of the Kuzbassugol plant. Kamov Nikolai Ilyich (graduate of the mechanical faculty of the Tomsk Technological Institute (TPU), 1923) in 1940 became the chief designer of the helicopter design bureau. Kozhevin Vladimir Grigorievich (Graduate Faculty of Mining Siberian Mechanical Engineering Institute (TPU), 1934) from 1941 he worked as the head of the technical department and deputy chief engineer of the Osinnikugol trust at the Kuzbassugol combine, where they mined especially valuable grades of coal needed for metallurgy and the defense of the country; in June 1942 he was appointed chief engineer and head of mine No. 10 of the same trust; the mine went from lagging behind to the forefront in Kuzbass and, starting in 1943, held the banner until the end of the war State Committee defense Kuznetsov Valery Alekseevich (graduate of the geological exploration department of the Tomsk Industrial Institute (TPU), 1932) during the Great Patriotic War, Kuznetsov led the work on compiling geological maps, which are the basis for the search for minerals, the need for which has increased sharply in these years. Grigory Ivanovich Nosov (graduate of the Tomsk Technological Institute (TPU), 1930) in 1940 headed one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in the USSR, the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. All [ ] students were mobilized to support the front.

In 1957, a research institute of nuclear physics was opened at TPI.

In 1962, at the base Faculty of Radio Engineering was created.

Launched in 1967 nuclear reactor Institute.

In 1981, the educational and scientific complex “Cybernetics” was created as part of TPI.

In 2009, the university was among the twelve winners of the competition for the selection of university development programs for which the category “national research university” is established and became the only Tomsk university 2009, which received this category.

In July 2013, the university was among the winners of the competition for the status of “Leading Universities of Russia”. There are only 17 such universities in Russian Federation.

On the basis of individual faculties, departments and specialties of Tomsk Polytechnic University in different times more than 20 independent universities were opened in Moscow, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Seversk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Barnaul, Chita, Khabarovsk and others Russian cities.

In particular, on the basis of two faculties (the Faculty of Radio Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Radio Control), the Institute of Radio Electronics and Electronic Engineering (now the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics) was created in 1962, and the Seversky Technological Institute of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI was organized in 1959 . as an evening branch of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute.

Yurga Technological Institute (branch)[ | ]

Tomsk Polytechnic University has a long, good tradition of cooperation with Kuzbass, providing various industries region with highly qualified specialists. Yurga Technological Institute (branch) of Tomsk Polytechnic University was created as a result of a number of transformations: educational and consulting center (1957), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (1987), TPU branch in Yurga (1993), UTI TPU (2003).

The main goal of YUTI TPU is to provide the engineering complex of Kuzbass with highly qualified engineering personnel with strong practical training. This problem has always been solved using base enterprise- Yurginsky Machine-Building Plant, which, having changed its owner in 2006, is solving, together with the institute, the task of training practice-oriented specialists in machine-building production.

Students are trained in 10 departments of the institute, 8 of which are graduating departments.

More than 1,500 students study at the institute, full-time, part-time and part-time correspondence forms. The Institute has 8 educational and laboratory buildings, which house over 70 laboratories equipped modern equipment and technical training facilities.

International cooperation[ | ]

International activities have become one of the most priority areas development in connection with the implementation of the “Program for increasing the competitiveness of TPU among the world's leading scientific and educational centers for 2013-2020.” Since 2012, TPU has been implementing the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) concept, aimed at improving the basic engineering education.

Since 2014, the implementation of CDIO standards has begun in 5 undergraduate programs:

  • 12.03.01 Instrumentation
  • 03/14/02 Nuclear physics and technology
  • 03/13/01 Thermal power engineering and heating engineering
  • 03.22.01 Materials science and materials technology
  • 09.03.02 Information systems and technologies.

From 2011-2014 about 2,000 university employees traveled abroad for advanced training, internships, training, lecturing, scientific work, conferences, symposia, exhibitions. 460 foreign delegations from 50 countries visited the university.

Currently, TPU has more than 200 agreements and contracts on cooperation in the field of education and scientific research with partners in 35 countries. In 2014, 28 new agreements were concluded with universities and organizations in 14 countries (Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, France, Vietnam, Brazil, Finland, India, Denmark, Israel, China, USA, Great Britain, Tajikistan). 8 agreements with universities included in the Top-500.

Cooperation between TPU and CERN is actively developing.
