What qualities should a teacher have? This question opens up an abyss of others: which teacher? Why and to whom should it? Personal or professional qualities, and which of them are more important? For example, can a teacher be required to love children, or is it enough that he treats them with respect and teaches his subject well? Should a teacher be a sociable leader? Which teacher is better - kind or strict? Which will be more successful - a rebel or a conformist?

We can endlessly reason, argue and prove. This is because there is no “spherical teacher in a vacuum.” Each teacher exists in a specific social, economic, cultural situation, where he has certain goals and needs certain qualities to successfully achieve them.

We were once again convinced of this by a small study undertaken in 2015 by eleventh-grader Gohar Sargsyan. Goar conducted it among high school students, their parents and teachers of the Shchelkovo gymnasium (city of Shchelkovo, Moscow region), where she herself studied. The purpose of the study was to compare “the requirements of the state, reflected in the professional standard of a teacher, and the needs of society to identify the priority qualities of a teacher.”

There is a document that defines a list of professional and personal requirements for a teacher in the Russian Federation - this is the professional standard for a teacher, which came into force on January 1, 2015. Based on these requirements, we can identify the qualities that the state would like to see in a teacher.

It's always interesting to compare official expectations with real life. This is what Gohar Sargsyan decided to do.

The idea for the study came from observing students and teachers different schools. At that time, I had already decided to become a teacher myself and wanted to learn more about the profession. Seeing that sometimes even the most talented and inquisitive children lose interest in learning, I decided to find the root of the problem and, as a future teacher, model the image of an ideal teacher. The image of a teacher who will help students become better.

More than a hundred high school students, 40 parents and 25 gymnasium teachers - elementary, middle and high school teachers - took part in the survey. All respondents were asked to free form answer the question: “What qualities should an ideal teacher have?”

Respondents independently named or wrote down the qualities and explained what they meant. The answers were systematized in summary tables.

The ideal teacher from the students' point of view

100% of students who took part in the survey believe that an ideal teacher should be strict and patient. Also, all student respondents were unanimous that the teacher should be able to interest students in the material.

80% of respondents - for an unbiased attitude on the part of the teacher and an individual approach (“everyone wants to be assessed fairly and helped to achieve better results”).

Students explained the word “fairness” as grading based on knowledge, not nationality, appearance and so on. Approximately the same words are used to describe tolerance in the answers of other respondents.

The ideal teacher from a parent's point of view

For all parents surveyed, the ideal teacher is one who knows his subject perfectly. How separate quality 100% of parents indicated “love for their profession and children.”

In the parents' questionnaires, an item appeared that the students did not identify for themselves: caring.

Indifference was explained by parents as a sympathetic attitude towards students. A caring teacher, firstly, always makes sure that the children have mastered the material, and secondly, provides emotional support when necessary.

But the teachers seem to be sure that patience and work will grind everything down. 100% of surveyed teachers at all levels - for excellent knowledge of the subject and patience.

But the main thing is that it was the survey of teachers, as Gohar admitted, that turned out to be for her interesting part research.

After talking with the teachers and learning about their feelings, I saw them with new side. What struck me most were the teachers who, instead of using the “correct” words appropriate to the situation, spoke honestly and openly about all the difficulties of this profession. It turned out that in teaching practice there are many situations in which an inexperienced person simply becomes confused. And all that can make a good teacher out of a person is caring. “If you have a desire to make the world a better place, then this is for you,” this is what a computer science teacher told me about the teaching profession.

Goar compared all the answers of her respondents with the requirements of the professional standard. The result was consistent. Unless, of course, no standard can require a teacher to have a sense of humor, caring, love for children and patience. But people in their non-standard, living human relations have the right to expect this from each other.

My research did not give a fundamentally new answer, but it showed me how important personal qualities are for this profession: it is about personal, not professional qualities my respondents said.
Now I am studying to become a teacher, I chose a foreign language as my specialty. What qualities of a teacher do I highlight now? The ideal teacher is not a template model. This is interesting, charismatic, educated person, charged with creative energy, who raises the same active, caring and thinking children.

When we were in school and loved to complain about the evil teachers who were already “fed up” with their bad grades, the answer to the question: "What should a teacher be like?", seemed obvious to us. But we all grew up and many of us encountered pedagogy: someone became school teacher, some as a tutor, and some as a university teacher. But, probably, each of those who nevertheless chose the path of teaching had a question: “ So what should a good teacher be like? What should a teacher not be like? Which teaching method should I choose?

And many, I think, in their youth stepped on the same rake.

Democratic teaching method is now considered the most popular. And, of course, many young teachers want to live up to the image of that same kind teacher from their childhood. WITH good grades, without screaming... and it seems that this perfect model behavior until... until you are faced with the issue of discipline.

What happens to young “good” teachers at school? Once in the children's flock, they find themselves “eaten” by those same children. Don't believe me? Look into such a teacher's classroom, where the children are standing on their ears, screaming, minding their own business, and the unfortunate teacher, in an attempt to kindly stop them, clutches his head, ready to burst into tears. And vice versa. It would seem that the evil and vile hysterical teacher has all the children sitting at attention: not a single one makes a sound, their mouths are closed and deathly silence reigns.

Why does this happen? What are we doing wrong? What qualities should a teacher have?

First of all, it’s worth figuring out who actually becomes a teacher. Among teachers, there are often skin-visual teachers and teachers with an anal vector. The first ones are the creators of culture, so they go to school to "teach children beauty". Often these are teachers of primary school, as well as Russian, literature, foreign language, MHC. Such teachers feel students on a subtle level, are very attentive, responsive and often intuitively choose correctly required style teaching. However, among these there are often counter examples: hysterical, fixated only on themselves, suffering from a love of irrational limitation. “Ivanov, sit up straight! Lisitsyna, where are you going? Vasiliev, shut your mouth! Baranov, why are you digging around?” And it’s scary to move in front of such a teacher in class: there will be such a scream, God forbid. And schoolchildren hate and fear it, but they teach the subject.

Teachers with the anal vector perform their natural function at school, because they are naturally given a craving for children and a desire to pass on knowledge to subsequent generations. And in teaching they will also be greatly helped by such qualities as excellent memory, a sense of justice and attention to detail. Anal-visual teachers are often just those “ kind teachers“, and if they do not yet have a skin vector, or their skin properties are not developed, they do not know how to limit children and maintain discipline in the classroom.

Our visual mistake is that we do not fully understand the significance of the democratic method of teaching. We often visually believe that “democracy” is complete laxity and chaos. We are visually mistaken, as if kindness alone can win over students, forgetting that the school is a kind of model of the primeval savannah. Anally, we rush to extremes: if not a utopian atmosphere of kindness and forgiveness, then harsh tyranny.

Thinking about what a real teacher should be like, we forget about what a real student is like. Even if he is not in a pack, but alone, and you come to study with him not at school, but at home.

The main mistakes that young teachers and tutors make:

1. We, anal-visual teachers, evaluate children through ourselves and form some of our own expectations. And we all have the same expectations. We already know how a student should behave at school! Children should be obedient, children should be interested in what seems interesting to us. Children will behave well if you are “kind” to them. And the most main mistake, which is common among young teachers and tutors... For some reason, we often believe that if you become a friend to a student (or students), he (or they) will love your subject, study well and behave perfectly.

No matter how it is! Children may love such a teacher, but discipline will not improve from this... and neither will their knowledge of the subject. Moreover, they will sit on the neck of a “kind” teacher-friend. There are so many videos circulating on the Internet where children either run naked into the classroom to the teacher, or swear at her, or something else...
